Chapter 23 — The Weight of Two Paths
The morning after the village meeting felt heavier than any storm they had survived.
Mia woke before the sun, sitting on the edge of her bed, staring at her hands. They felt warmer than usual, almost humming. Not painful… just strange. A reminder that something inside her was growing faster than she understood.
She whispered to herself,
"Why now…? Why when everyone needs peace?"
Outside, the village moved in slow, tired motions. People fetched water without greeting each other. Farmers checked their crops with fear instead of hope. Children stayed close to their parents. Everywhere Mia walked, she felt the fear following her like a shadow.
Not fear of her.
Fear of what Luna had become.
Fear of what might come next.
MIKE'S BURDEN.....
Mike watched Mia from afar as she checked the small growing field. The crops she touched still glowed faintly proof that her inner gift hadn't faded even when the stone vanished.
He tightened his fists.
He wanted to tell her everything.
How he never forgot the white stone.
How he still heard it calling in his dreams.
How every time Mia smiled, it felt like light touching him.
But every time he tried to speak, his words dried up.
He kept everything inside.
And now, with Luna working in the shadows, Mike felt like time was running out. He whispered under his breath,
"I'll protect you… even if you never know."
THE FARMER WARRIORS STRUGGLE.....
Jaro, Lina, and the rest of the Farmer Warriors were trying to stay strong, but every mission felt harder. Luna's traps slowed them down. Villagers from other lands feared helping them. Guards patrolled the roads more than ever.
Rumors spread:
"Luna controls the winds."
"Luna commands the Witch's shadows."
"Luna is coming back for revenge."
And every rumor twisted the villagers' hearts tighter.
Some even asked,
"Should Mia still lead us?"
Those words tore Mia silently, though she never showed it.
LINA'S SECRET GUILT...
Out of everyone, Lina suffered the most.
She sat alone under an old tree, pulling her knees close, trying not to cry. She remembered Luna as a laughing, playful twin someone who used to follow her everywhere, someone who dreamed of having a big family of friends.
And Lina whispered,
"I should've seen she was hurting… I should've been a better sister."
The guilt lived in her chest like a stone.
But she still fought beside Mia.
Still stood with Jaro.
Still believed Luna could come back.
MIA'S NEW PATH.....
As the Farmer Warriors prepared for their next journey, Mia walked to the edge of the village. The wind brushed her hair softly—the same way it moved the night the stone first glowed.
A voice inside her heart whispered:
"You're growing.
You're changing.
You're being prepared."
Prepared for what?
She didn't know.
She only knew that the power storm wasn't a warning of doom…
It was a countdown.
The Kingdom of Kings…
The Witch's rise…
The coming war…
Everything was pulling her toward something bigger than she imagined.
She looked at Mike, Lina, and Jaro as they approached her.
She smiled gently and said,
"We're not done. We still move forward."
And just like that, hope flickered again.
Small… but alive.
