EPISODE 26 Whispers in the Wind
The wind had changed. Dustfall's fields, once alive with the gentle rustling of crops, now whispered with a cold, uneasy sound. The leaves bent sharply as if trying to warn the travelers. Mia felt the change the moment she stepped outside.
She wasn't alone. Mike, Jaro, and Lina followed, each moving cautiously across the uneven dirt paths leading away from the village. The journey had become routine, but tonight felt different. There was a weight in the air, a tightness pressing against her chest.
"They're watching us," Jaro muttered, his eyes scanning the horizon.
"Who?" Mia asked, her voice low but steady.
"I don't know," he admitted. "But shadows are moving faster than the wind."
Mia's hands tingled. That strange warmth that had been growing inside her for months pulsed harder. She tried to ignore it, focusing instead on the path ahead.
THE SILENT VILLAGES
As they moved from village to village, the silence was suffocating. Windows were shut. Doors barred. Families whispered behind thick wooden walls. Even the sound of footsteps on the dusty roads seemed too loud.
"Luna's influence," Mike said quietly, his voice grim. "The Witch is using her. They're testing us."
Mia clenched her fists. "We've faced worse."
"But never like this," Lina whispered. Her eyes darted toward the trees lining the road. "They've scared everyone."
And they had. For miles, villages lay untouched by hands willing to help. Fear had taken root like poison, and it grew faster than any crop.
THE FIRST ATTACK
A sudden crack split the night. From the shadows, a figure darted forward fast, silent, deadly. Mike shouted a warning, but it was too late. The creature lunged at Mia.
Time slowed.
Mia's pulse quickened. The warmth inside her hands flared like molten light. She threw her hands forward. A burst of golden energy exploded from her palms, slamming the creature backward into the dirt with a sickening thud.
Jaro swung his blade at two more shadows emerging from the darkness. Lina ducked low, slashing with precision, moving like water around the danger.
Mia felt her heart pound as she realized something she hadn't before: this power inside her was alive, and it wanted to protect, not just grow.
THE NIGHT OF THE OMEN
After the attack, they moved faster, hearts racing, breathing heavy. They reached a small hill overlooking a valley that stretched beyond the horizon.
Mia leaned on the edge, staring down at the blackened fields below.
"Everywhere we go… it's worse," she said, voice trembling slightly.
Mike stepped beside her. His hand brushed against hers. He wanted to say something, everything he had kept inside for years the words he never dared to speak. But before he could, a low hum filled the air.
The sky split with a blinding flash. Lightning, fierce and golden, arced from the clouds in a way that made the hair on their arms stand on end.
Mia's eyes widened. The warmth inside her chest flared, pulsing with the energy of the storm.
Mike's jaw dropped. "Mia…" he whispered, almost in awe and fear.
But the lightning disappeared as quickly as it came, leaving the sky black and still.
Mia's hands were shaking. She didn't know what it meant, but deep inside, a voice whispered:
This is only the beginning.
THE PATH AHEAD
They made camp for the night, the silence pressing heavier than before.
Jaro tried to make a fire, but even the flames seemed afraid, flickering nervously in the cold wind.
Lina sat close to Mia. "Do you think… we're ready for what's coming?"
Mia shook her head. "I don't know. But I will be. I have to."
Mike's gaze remained on her, his chest tight with words unspoken. The fragment of the vanished stone he had kept pulsed faintly in his pocket, almost as if it knew the storm meant something.
"And we'll be ready together," he whispered, more to himself than anyone else.
Mia nodded, unaware that far away, Luna was learning to harness shadows the Witch had given her, watching, waiting, and learning.
The storm's hum faded into the night. But it left a taste of fire on the air.
Something was coming.
Something that would change everything.
And Mia had to grow stronger. Faster.
Before it struck.
