Evelyn sat back down still confused about the previous interaction so she didn't notice Miles' assessing gaze.
If she was in her usual state, she would have immediately noticed he was looking at her with curiosity and trying to gauge her mood.
The moment she came, Selene could wait to gossip.
"Evie, there was this really handsome man just now. Miles said his name is Damon. You should have been here to see it. Oh, but he looks familiar though"
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat when she heard the name. She forced herself to look natural and laughed softly.
"His face is on every news station, newspaper and magazine. It's no wonder you find him familiar."
Selene's instincts told her it was more than that but she couldn't think of where she would have come in contact with such a man. Thinking like this, she convinced herself that if she had really seen him before, she would definitely remember.
Miles, lowered his head quietly not interrupting their conversation. One would think he was being courteous but he was simply trying to stop himself from laughing out loud.
They finished eating and Evelyn asked for the bill but was informed that miles had already paid. She was slightly speechless. She said she was going to treat him but he ended up paying.
They went outside and Selene noticed her holding something in her hand.
"What's that?"
Evelyn realized she was still holding the card. Annoyed, the crumpled it up and threw it in the trash.
"Nothing important."
Miles watched all this quietly. He waited for them to get a ride, then walked to the parked car at the other side of the road.
He got into the backseat and the driver strated moving. He turned to Damon incredulously.
"What exactly did you do?"
Damon answered expressionlessly.
"Asked her to marry me."
Miles took a deep breath.
"And I'm guessing she said no. What were you expecting? She has been divorced for less that five—"
Damon cut him off.
"She didn't say no. She just didn't say yes."
"You are delusional."
Damon muttered under his breath.
"You're one to talk."
Miles laughed speechlessly.
"So we're making diggs now?"
Damon didn't respond and Miles sighed.
"She doesn't know you. And don't start with me, she obviously doesn't remember you. You should stop acting like that and try to get to know her from scratch or else you'll scare her away"
Damon hummed and stared absently out the window as the city lights flickered past. He did realize that there was a chance she didn't remember him anymore but thinking it and actually experiencing it firsthand were two different things.
"Seriously," Miles said after a moment. "What are you thinking? You barely spoke three sentences to her."
"I've spoken enough," Damon replied evenly.
"You've spoken enough to scare her half to death," Miles shot back. "You don't just walk up to a woman fresh out of a court battle and propose. That's not confidence, that's lunacy."
Damon didn't respond. Miles was right. He acted impulsively. But he wasn't going to let his opportunity go. He backed down once and heard she was getting married. He would not make that mistake a second time.
At least now, she must have an impression of him. That was enough. He could wait. He had waited for years and to him, it didn't matter waiting some more.
What he wouldn't be able to bear was if she moved on with someone that wasn't him. It was an impulsive decision yes, but it served it's purpose.
Miles sighed when Damon didn't answer. "You know, sometimes I really wonder if all that money fried your brain."
"Don't pretend like you're not rooting for me," Damon said without looking at him.
"I'm rooting for her," Miles corrected. "Because if you keep charging at her like this, she's going to file a restraining order before she files for anything else."
Damon finally glanced over, an amused flicker in his eyes. "You underestimate her."
"No," Miles muttered. "You're overestimating yourself."
He turned his attention back to his phone, trying to mask the grin tugging at his lips. These two weren't strangers to him. He knew Damon wouldn't back down, but he also knew Evelyn wasn't one to respond well to hard tactics.
As someone who had pined over her for years, Damon obviously knew this as well. Miles only hoped that everything should turn out fine. Because he wouldn't be able to pick sides.
Back in his office, Damon sat behind his desk, staring at the window overlooking the skyline. Miles had gone off to who knows where, leaving Damon alone at the mercy of his thoughts.
His mind spiraled when he was alone. Thoughts of Evelyn tended to consume him. After hearing if her marriage, he was distraught. But he took a step back and hid his feelings quietly in his heart.
He had seen her throw his card away. His heart felt like it was being squeezed by something but he comforted himself. If she was this easy to get close to, she wouldn't be the person he liked.
He could tell she cared about Nathan. He would never do anything to ruin her happiness. Thankfully, Nathan was still the idiot he had always been. He didn't appreciate the treasure he had at home, providing Damon with a chance now.
For two years, he'd watched her from afar — quietly, carefully, because she'd been someone else's wife. He'd seen the way she'd smile at charity events, looking at Nathan with absolute trust.
She was nothing like the girl who he fell in love with. He had to admit, he was jealous. Jealous he wasn't the one on the receiving end of that gaze.
But that didn't change the fact that she restrained herself heavily to fit Nathan's mould of a wife. He couldn't wait for her to come back to the boisterous woman she once once.
He hadn't meant to speak so suddenly today. But when she'd looked up at him with those same soft eyes, something in him had snapped.
He wanted her to know, wanted her to see him and remember him.
He promised himself that he wouldn't miss this chance. Since Nathan wasn't capable of being a good husband, then he couldn't be blamed for taking the woman.
