I desperately wanted to ask Sebastian why he would involve himself in such a dangerous world in the first place.
Even if his family passed the empire down to him as a dark legacy, it wasn't like Sebastian truly had to do it. He already possessed his own highly respectable occupation, a successful lawyer and philanthropist, which worked well for him.
I couldn't fathom why he would risk everything for a life of violence and crime.
But I knew better than to push my luck. If I voiced that question, I would already be passing a serious, invisible boundary. The fact that Sebastian and I were able to talk so openly, analyzing his criminal operations like we were discussing stock market trends, felt like a small, terrifying miracle. I knew I shouldn't push it.
So, I simply nodded my head, adopting the mask of compliance I had perfected since arriving. "Okay, I understand," I said, hoping the sincerity I forced into my voice would convince him.
