Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Are you threatening me

I spun on my heel, facing the whole courtroom. My voice was a block of ice, sharp and clear. "My client, Commissioner Darius, knows nothing about the money meant for the public being transferred. And that's a big 'if'—if any money was even transferred at all."

I let my eyes drift over the shocked faces of the spectators. "From everything we've seen happen in this court, it's now obvious. My client was being framed, plain and simple, for a crime he didn't commit. The plaintiff, instead of doing a proper investigation, decided to chase headlines and sue a man who is busy working for the people he was elected to serve."

I delivered that line in a cold, final tone, then turned my back on the stunned courtroom.

The relief from the defense table was palpable. I walked the short distance back to my seat, slipping in beside Commissioner Darius again. I leaned in, keeping my voice a low, hard whisper. "It's over."
