Chapter 8 - Caring Or Just Responsibility

Evelyne's POV

Tristan's hands wrapped around my waist, he pulled me closer to him. I didn't expect him to do that, even in front of this many people.

What was he thinking?!

"Don't get too far away from me. I haven't let you finish the job yet."

"Ahahaha... Everhart looks very close to your pretty secretary. Then my secretary and I should get going. See you soon, Everhart."

"Sure thing, Bridget." Tristan nodded his head and Mr. Bridget left with his secretary.

I immediately pushed Tristan away from me. I had wanted to do that for a long time, but I couldn't do it in front of them.

"Mr. Everhart, I told you not to pull me around like that. People could misunderstand our relationship. Moreover, you..."

"Especially since I'm engaged and I'm your boss?" he asked cutting me off.

I nodded my head. "Yes, even more so because of that."

Tristan said that he was just trying to get Mr. Bridget to leave quickly because he was very tired. If not for that reason, Mr. Bridget would have continued talking to him.

I could only sigh when I found out. Even though I couldn't believe his excuse. I looked at my watch which was now 8:45pm.

The bus stop is quite far from here, I only have 15 minutes to wait. Even if I ordered a taxi, it would take time for it to arrive.

"It's late, come with me." He walked first expecting me to follow him.

I didn't understand what he wanted. I still stood still where I was currently standing until he looked back at me.

"I said come with me!" he said again this time in a firmer tone.

Having no other choice, I walked after him. We went to the car park and he told me to get into his car.

"Get in the car."

"Excuse me?" I asked.

He let out a long breath. "Get in my car. I'll take you home."

"I can take the bus home. You don't have to drive me home," I replied.

"It's late, a woman shouldn't be going home alone at this hour," he said.

You're the one who made me have to go home this late-

"It's not nine o'clock yet. It's not too late."

But he didn't seem to want to accept my answer. He opened his car door right next to the driver. "Get in."

"Mr. Everhart, I told you that I-"

"I said get in the car right now."

His tone had changed, so demanding and the look in his eyes so sharp. Leaving no room for me to argue.

In the end I could only get into his car and sit down. He closed the car door then walked around to get into the steering wheel and we drove away from the restaurant.

During the trip, we didn't speak at all. I tried to avoid eye contact with her. I knew she glanced at me occasionally, because I could feel it.

Working with him for a whole day had already worn me out. Now I have to be in the same car with him. Why does bad luck still follow me?

He continued to drive the car as if he already knew where I lived at the moment. I can't believe he even remembers the way to my parents' old house.

"So don't you feel lonely?" he asked suddenly. "Even though your parents' house isn't big. But I'm sure it's very empty when you're alone there."

"Not really. After all, I'm busy all day working and then when I get home I can cook and rest. It just keeps repeating itself," I replied flatly.

I kept looking out the window while talking to him. Hoping I'd get home soon and see Luke. I didn't want to keep Daniel there either, he definitely needed a rest too.

After a few minutes that felt like an eternity, I finally arrived in front of my house. I quickly got out of the car and walked around to his door.

"Thank you for driving me," I said briefly. "Next time I can go home by myself."

Without waiting for his response, I turned to walk away from him.

However, he suddenly called out to me which reflexively made me stop.

"Eve!"

My steps halted at the sound of his voice calling my little name. Only my family and him called me that. Even Daniel had never called me that.

I turned my head slightly to him, trying to remain firm without appearing nostalgic for the nickname.

"Good night. Don't forget to take dinner," he said.

"I know. I'm not a child." I resumed my steps into the house and closed the door.

I stood leaning against the door, I couldn't understand why he had to say that and even call me by that name.

It's been so long since I last heard someone call me by that name.

What do you really want?

Do you still want to see me feeling tormented or regretting what I never did?

When I peeked through the window at him, his car was still parked on the street in front of my house.

What was he waiting for?

As I was peeking out, I was suddenly startled by Daniel coming up to me.

"Evelyne, did you just come back? Why do you look so surprised like you've just seen a ghost?" he asked with a chuckle.

"You really surprised me! I almost had a heart attack because of you," I protested to him.

I explained that I was just looking out the window, where Tristan had just driven me home. For some reason, Daniel immediately fell silent and the smile seemed to fade from his face when I mentioned Tristan's name in front of him.

"Now I think he's gone. So where's Luke? Is he asleep?"

I tried to change the subject, and Daniel nodded his head saying that Luke had been sleeping since earlier.

"You must be hungry, I had time to order sushi for you. Don't worry, it's fresh because I ordered it when you said you were on your way home," he said and pulled me into the kitchen.

Daniel knew very well that I loved sushi and it just so happened that I hadn't eaten anything since earlier.

I washed my hands and enjoyed the sushi, it felt so good after a long day at work.

"So he drove you home? Did he say anything to you that might make you uncomfortable?" Daniel asked.

The question sounded like someone who was quite protective of me, but I knew he was just trying not to seem too worried about me.

"No, he didn't say anything that made me uncomfortable. So you don't have to worry about that," I replied.

I didn't want to make him feel really worried, I'd often been too much trouble for him so worrying about me would only burden him.

Despite the fact that every single thing I'm doing now with Tristan is bothering me as well as my past memories.
