The Challenge and the Wall
When I challenged that six-foot shadow to appear again, it didn't return to the room. Instead, it moved to the outer wall of the house. From where I stood, I could see it clearly—pacing back and forth, completing 4 or 5 rounds. Everyone in the house was fast asleep; there was no way a human could be walking there. My heart hammered against my ribs as I realized I was the only witness to this supernatural stroll.
Terrified, I ran to the kitchen where my Aunt (Masi) and Nani were working. "There is something in this house! I just saw it!" I cried out. To my surprise, they didn't even look up. They continued their work in a cold, eerie silence, as if they already knew or were too afraid to acknowledge it.
Later, I told my father. I thought he would dismiss it as my imagination, but his face turned pale. He confessed that that very morning, as he woke up, he saw a shadow standing in the courtyard. By the time he could grab his glasses to see clearly, it had vanished. It wasn't just me; the house was waking up to its new, dark inhabitants.
Experience (3): The Four White Shadows
The next evening, my cousin and I were exploring the rooftops. In our neighborhood, the terrace walls were low, and one could easily jump across four different houses. We climbed onto a terrace that was two stories higher than our house to watch the sunset.
As the sky turned a bruised purple, the atmosphere grew heavy. "We need to go, it's getting dark," I told my cousin, feeling an instinctive urge to flee. We jumped back onto our terrace, but as we approached the stairs leading down, I froze.
Four distinct, white shadows were emerging from the stairwell. They glided upward, passed through the gate, and disappeared into the side walls.
"Run! Just run!" I grabbed my cousin's hand. We had to lock the terrace gate, but the stairs were now swallowed in pitch-black darkness. My hands trembled as I fumbled with the lock. I was paralyzed by the thought: The very gate I need to enter is where those four shadows just came out from. We didn't look back; we just bolted down the stairs until we reached the safety of the lights below.
Experience (4): The Face in the Night
That night, we decided to sleep on the terrace. My Nani and Masi slept on the floor, while my cousin brother and I sat on a cot (charpai), distracted by a video on his phone.
Despite his attempts to distract me, I kept seeing a shadow pacing in the gallery area. "Look there! Do you see someone walking?" I whispered to my brother. I wanted to know if I was losing my mind.
"Just look at the phone, don't look around," he replied bluntly. I scanned the neighboring roofs—it was 2:00 AM, and not a soul was outside. No one was walking whose shadow could be cast on our wall.
When my brother fell asleep, my fear peaked. My Nani and I had to go to the store-room at the back of the terrace to get my mattress. Even Nani seemed frightened. As we stepped out, the store-room door started opening and shutting on its own. There was no wind. We just stared at each other, paralyzed.
I tried to sleep, but my younger Nana (grandfather's brother) was sleeping nearby. His resemblance to my deceased Nana ji was so striking that it felt like looking at a ghost. And then, the most horrific sight appeared.
On the neighboring roof, a figure appeared. It was just a face—no body, no torso—just a head floating in the dark. The skin was a weird, ghastly white, like someone suffering from severe vitiligo. The face was distorted, and it was staring directly at me, its eyes boring into mine.
It was 3:00 AM. The silence was deafening as that bodiless face continued to glare. I squeezed my eyes shut and began chanting the Hanuman Chalisa with every ounce of faith I had. It was hours before exhaustion finally pulled me into a fitful sleep.
