Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

'They did WHAT!?'

Godzilla winced a bit and huffed before lying back down, letting his symbiotic partner express her shock as she wished.

'They learned to supress their power and walk the land. And Rayquaza learned to travel through space. He is currently on another world right now.'

Mothra chittered agitatedly and zilled back and forth through the air.

'And you did not think to wake me up!??'

Godzilla could not help but give a flat stare to the Titan.

'Wake you up...how? Last I checked, you do not control how long it takes for you to transition from your pupa state to adult state. It is already a testament to how much stronger your body and your cycle as a whole has become, thanks to bathing in those three's energy for all these years that you even woke up this quickly.'

'That is besides the point!! I wanted to be there when those two finally figured out that those crystals could be used for more than just a snack! And how in the name of the Hollow Earth did the old man even manage to achieve space flight!? I never knew he could do that?'

'Don't ask me. They don't tell me anything except when they find my reactions funny.'

'That's by your choice! You cut off all communications with Rayquaza after becoming the Alpha. Anyways, I need to get to the surface right now! I want to finally meet those two face to face instead of just having their intent and thoughts in my mind!'

'Not right now. They are in human territory right now, among those little humans that worship them like those who used to worship me. Like the ones that still worship you.'

Mothra immediately calmed down at that thought, feeling Godzilla's slightly melancholic intent.

He may appear to be tough and uncaring on the surface, but there was no denying that when he cared for someone, he really cared for them with all his heart.

Just like he cares for her, and just like he cared for those humans that built the temple he calls his home.

Atlantis, they called it. An ancient city built in what humans call the Atlantic Ocean.

It was a beautiful place full of people just like her Iwi. A people who worshipped Godzilla, calling him the incarnation of Poseidon, whoever that was.

Just like how her unique radiation transformed the Iwi, giving them telepathic powers, Godzilla's radiation gave those ancient humans the ability to breathe in water, even if only for a little bit longer than regular humans, while also making their bodies more resilient.

So great was their devotion to Godzilla that even Rayquaza came down once in a while to teach them what he calls 'science'.

However, just like with everything involving humans, good things never last long.

He never told anyone what happened with those people. Not even to her. But what she did know was that Godzilla was deeply hurt by whatever the humans did, and the city of Atlantis was abandoned completely by the beings who built it.

Godzilla never involved himself with humans after that and asked Atlantis to be sunken by Kyogre and Groudon, who respected his wish and shifted the whole island into a hidden cavern deep beneath the ocean.

After that incident, he never showed his higher intellect to the humans. He never showed his ability of sapience. He never showed them that his thinking capacity far surpasses anything that a human could ever hope to have.

They saw him as an animal, so he gave them an animal.

An animal that protects the world because it is his duty, but never involved himself with those tiny primates with destruction in their very blood.

This was one of the many points of contention between Godzilla and Rayquaza back then that caused friction and ultimately led to Godzilla stopping his communications with the dragon.

Keening softly in comfort, earning herself a huff of amusement, Mothra continued speaking through their link.

'You know, you could give the humans another chance. Maybe they have changed?'

'They have not changed, Mothra. And they never will. That is just who they are. And truthfully, I do not blame them for their nature.'

Godzilla was not just saying it either. He really did not blame the humans for their nature. Mothra knew this to be the truth.

Because he was there when humanity was first born, just like the rare few Titans that were awake during that time, along with the trio who are perpetually active, with rare few hibernations that barely last a few centuries at a time, unlike the other Titans who can sleep for thousands of years.

He knew that their kind was born in a world at war. A world where literally everything around them wanted to eat them. That is why they developed that senseless aggression, that hatred and fear of the unknown. To protect themselves, they turned into monsters.

A trait that they still carry to this day. A trait that Mothra only managed to supress in her tribe after thousands of years of effort and support by showing that they need not fear the world as long as she was by their side.

'Their tools will change, their civilizations will change, their weapons will change, and their way of doing things will change. But in the end, their violent nature will never change. I have seen it before. I have seen it recently, where they tried to kill me after harnessing the power of nature in a metal shell, and I will continue to see it in the future as well as long as I am alive, as long as their species is alive, which, admittedly, may be a relatively short time given how they are starting to turn those weapons on themselves, again.'

'That is a boring way of thinking, Goji! You need to dream a bit.'

'Stop imitating the old man and don't call me that stupid name.'

Mothra chittered with mischief as Godzilla growled.

'Why not? It is still your name, is it not? One that the 'old man' gave you? Just like he gave me my name?'

That shut up Godzilla, who just grumbled and went back to sleep on his pedestal while Mothra happily draped over him with her wings spread out, letting her body absorb the ambient radiation of the magma cavern where Groudon sunk this city.

'But really, I want to see those three, and I don't want to wait too long.'

'You won't have to wait too long. From what I heard from Kyogre, the old man should be returning to Earth in a few days at most. Apparently, he discovered another alien up there, and it is a dormant dragon, again.'

Godzilla growled out those last words through his thoughts, expressing his extreme displeasure at the combination of the words 'Alien' and 'Dragon'. Unable to forget how he was forced to absorb Groudon's radiation back then to strengthen himself, while Mothra absorbed Rayquaza's radiation to defeat that three-headed dragon that Rayquaza called Ghidora.

They won, and even managed to seal away that eternally regenerating beast within Shimo's never-thawing ice. But it still felt humiliating for him to take on Groudon's offer and not be able to defeat the dragon on his own.

Thankfully, the years have soothed that old wound to his pride, and he has long since let go of it, mostly.

But now? Another alien dragon that could be a threat to his world? And one that was just on the next planet over, according to Rayquaza? That was simply unacceptable for him.

Mothra once again chittered in amusement at her symbiotic partner's temper.

'I don't recall you having this kind of anger for dragons. Especially for Rayquaza.'

'Yeah, well, the old man is the old man. He is less of a real dragon and more of a freakishly smart snake that somehow became a dragon, his own words by the way. As for the others? Our world doesn't have proper dragons like the ones from human myths. They are just not natural to our ecosystem. That is why Ghidora's presence disrupted our world so much back then. His very existence is unnatural to our world.'

'Then, by that logic, all dragons would be enemies. And, in the future, if a benevolent dragon arrives on Earth, you will fight them too?'

'....That will depend. But that is for the future.'

'Hmm. Fine. I'll let you be.'

'.....'

'.....What?'

'You said you'll let me be?'

'Yes?'

'Then, why not get off-ow!'

Mothra's leg slightly dug into Godzilla's back, making the lizard titan wince as a cold killing intent flooded his mind.

Once again, he showed why he was the king of monsters and wiser than others by remaining silent and lying down quietly, much to the delight of his symbiotic partner, who chittered happily and continued sprawled over him.

It was only when her mental link was hijacked by Kyogre to tell her that Rayquaza had returned that she got up and happily left for the surface, dragging a grumpy Godzilla along.
