Chapter 27 – Where Has Old Xuan Gone?
Slap—
A scarlet afterimage streaked through the air like a lightning bolt, tearing through with a piercing sonic boom, and slammed violently into the man beside it.
The speed was so terrifying that the man didn't even have a chance to react. The confusion still written on his face had barely faded before he was hurled backward like a cannonball.
After smashing through several massive trees—each thick enough to require two men to embrace—he suddenly spat a mouthful of blood. His body, bones shattered and mangled, collapsed onto the ground like a heap of mud, his breath flickering like a dying candle. Sporadic convulsions wracked him, and it was clear that he had little time left to live.
"Wu Luan!"
Witnessing this, the ten remaining students' eyes instantly reddened. All of them locked their gazes onto the spirit beast that had suddenly charged into their midst.
It was a spirit beast resembling a gigantic gecko. Its four limbs pressed to the ground, yet its body was far larger than any ordinary gecko—over ten meters long by rough estimation—and covered in dark crimson scales. The attack it had just unleashed hadn't even come from its fearsome claws, but from its massive tail, which alone seemed to take up half its body length.
Most striking of all was the mark on its left eye—a clear gash, likely clawed out by another spirit beast. Its abdomen bore several narrow slashes, from which blood still trickled. It was obvious that this spirit beast had recently fought others and fled after losing the battle.
Having already killed two students in rapid succession, the beast's remaining right eye blazed even redder. Observing the weak humans before it, a glint of scorn and playful malice crossed its gaze. It even twisted its mouth into a human-like, mocking grin, emitting a harsh, hissing laugh as if ridiculing their presumptuousness.
The stench of blood and saliva hung thick in the air. At the forefront, Zhang Lexuan's expression darkened. Just from this brief encounter, they had already lost two people. One inner academy student who recognized the beast's identity was visibly on the verge of collapse.
"Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard! And it's a hundred-thousand-year-old one! Why is a hundred-thousand-year-old spirit beast in the mixed zone!?"
"Where is Teacher Xuan? Why hasn't he shown up!?"
Aside from Zhang Lexuan, the team included two Spirit saints, with the rest being Spirit Kings and Spirit Emperors. Even with this lineup, losing two members already weakened their strength. Even if all twelve were present, it might not be enough to face this Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard.
Confronting a hundred-thousand-year-old spirit beast, even a titled Douluo could not guarantee victory. And this beast was notorious for its ferocity.
Unlike the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger, which devours other spirit beasts to grow stronger, the Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard kills purely for pleasure.
Though its egg-laying rate is high, very few survive. From birth, its young are forced by the mother to fight their siblings to the death, until only one victor remains. Even those who survive are often gravely injured during these battles, barely clinging to life. Only the final survivor receives the mother's acknowledgment and care, allowing it to hunt independently.
This harsh upbringing imbues them with terrifying combat instincts and a bloodthirsty nature. Even when encountering prey—or other Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizards—they fight to the death without hesitation.
Facing such a beast, even the battle-hardened students of the Shrek Academy's inner court felt despair creeping into their hearts.
At that moment, a thunderous shout exploded in the air.
"Enough!"
From behind Zhang Lexuan, the ghostly image of a silver moon appeared. Beneath her, seven spirit rings materialized—two yellow, two purple, and three black—emanating a powerful aura that caused everyone's bodies to tremble, dispelling some of the despair.
"Teacher Xuan's whereabouts are unknown. We have to rely on ourselves. This Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard is clearly heavily injured. If we give it everything we've got, we might still have a chance."
No sooner had she spoken than a premonition of death surged in her mind. The scarlet afterimage descended again. Perhaps it had been provoked by her shout, or sensed that Zhang Lexuan posed the greatest threat. This time, the target of the tail strike was her.
Without hesitation, she leaped back. At the same instant, her seventh and sixth spirit rings flared brightly. Her body erupted in dazzling silver light, and the silver moon phantom behind her surged forward, engulfing her and the sixth spirit ring in its radiance.
As the black spirit ring merged into the phantom, the silver moon turned a deep, sinister black, like a devouring abyss. A silver halo tightly encircled it, resembling a solar eclipse.
The Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard's tail was almost upon her. Then, a deafening roar erupted from the black moon, accompanied by a blindingly brilliant pillar of light.
With her martial spirit fully awakened and nearly frenzied spirit power channeled into her attack, the force of Zhang Lexuan's sixth spirit skill struck the lizard's tail with unimaginable might. The beast had no time to react.
A thunderous explosion followed, raining blood across the battlefield. The Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard screamed in agony, instinctively turning to examine its tail. Its scales were shattered, flesh shredded, and a half-meter-wide wound gaped at the center, blood and tissue evaporated by the overwhelming energy surge. The injury was severe.
A creature famed for its killing frenzy, now grievously wounded by a human, had its mind instantly overtaken by murderous rage. With a violent roar, it lunged straight at the silver moon form of Zhang Lexuan.
Meanwhile, the inner court students watched with exhilaration. If her attack could wound such a beast this severely, there was finally a glimmer of hope.
"All of you, protect Zhang Lexuan!"
A spirit saint student shouted decisively, his seventh spirit ring igniting. The rest immediately unleashed their spirit skills as well.
Spirit skills have cooldowns. Only Zhang Lexuan could pierce the scales to harm the Blood-Corrosion Dragon Lizard, so the others fought to protect and support her.
Their strategy was simple: target the beast's wounds, distract it, and create an opening for Zhang Lexuan's next strike.
Now that its tail was severely injured, the threat was far less than before. If they could hold out a little longer, perhaps teacher Xuan could reach them first without Zhang Lexuan needing to attack again.
Victory was possible.
