Chapter 19 - How to Catch a Ram

In the end it was decided that Tom would alone travel to the other side of the ram, make his shots and get loud, the idea was to scare them right into Kurt and Hank. The tension was building as all they were waiting on was the shot to be fired, once that happened Joe would cast his hex, and they would be off. It seemed to take forever, at any time it was possible the ram could just leave of their own accord making the plan much less likely. The rams were definitely goblin sized rather than something Kurt or Sara would imagine riding, but the goblins seemed to think they would be perfect, and they had no reason to argue. Goblins were shorter and thus much lighter than humans.

The rams had not noticed them, large curling horns with brown fur. They were unkempt, and hair was knotted. One was laying down, it seemed like they were going to be staying for at least a little while longer. The trap was slowly enclosing around them. They were enough to carry any of the goblins.

Then an arrow hit one of the ram right in its shoulder, and another. The plan worked as the ram darted in the opposite direction of the arrows, right into the trap. Joe slammed his staff down, a cloud of power encased them and Kurt and Hank dashed out of their hiding place. Hank had managed to grab the horns of the ram. Kurt had long been so skillful and was hit square in the chest it hurt, but somehow Kurt had managed to grab its leg tripping it up. Getting up as quick as he could he gave the ram a big hit on the shoulder it had been hit with the arrow with. The Rams had started to struggle.

The idea of a third ram was completely forgotten. As only two of them had been caught up.

Just then several tentacles had managed to wrap around the ram Kurt had hit, Kurt leapt to hold down the animal. Everything was working. Sara was giving a pained expression but if we could just make it until Joe did his thing. Hank had been able to hold his ram and force it closer to Kurt. It wasn't going to hold for long.

Joe had switched the bags on the top of his staff, which took most of the time as everything had happened in a matter of seconds. Waving his staff wildly in the air as he came running it. He was chanting something that the spell couldn't or didn't bother translating.

Joe slammed his staff between the creatures sticking into the ground, and a pressure was exerted from above helping them hold down the rams, but they were also not immune from the effect entirely. Joe took two of his fingers into one of his bags and there was a paint like substance on the and made a mark on the ram forehead Kurt was holding and suddenly the ram stopped resisting, quickly doing the same to the other ram Joe stood up, made another chant and walked to his staff.

"It's done! We did it, let's get them on a leash, they will follow us but if they get too spooked they will run to save their lives, we should be able to truly tame them after a few weeks."

Hank got off his ram and was taking some rope he had made a leash for it, "and we managed to do it without much harm coming to them, this is all superficial. Going up to the arrow sticking out of the ram, "okay buddy" patting its fur, "this is gonna sting but.." he pulled it out the ram winched but didn't run away.

"We should still walk them out, also we don't know if the poison has made a full effect on them," said Joe, "so I agree, it best the mounts they just get back safely."

"Maybe on that last leg of it though, just to show it to the rest of them."

"They are great for us too, they should have no trouble going up and down the canyon." said Hank.

"Still it would have been great if a Raid Hawk was here, I feel Lady Sara's ability would make the whole process easier for them especially, holding their wings closed is the hardest part."

"For you maybe, you know only you short ones can ride those things. Now a wyvryn that is a Goblin ride," said Tom.

"Typical men can't be happy with what you have," said Sara.

Kurt hadn't realized that there were so many different kinds of mounts for goblins, that even just looking places could usually find something more or less capable. And the thought of hawks and wyvryns, flying creatures, hadn't even thought that was a possibility.

"We did good then, I guess all there is to do is head back right?"

"I suppose so," said Joe, "it is best to back track the way we came, that will lead us closer to where we came from, it's a bit unpredictable where on the border we will get out otherwise. We have traveled a while through the forest, so it's best to get started, hopefully we will be back by dinner."
