Chapter 7 - Welcome to the Aegis Corps

"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" Jin kicked the bed so hard that he broke the entire frame. "How did she spot me? No, that's a stupid question. She has fucking super vision!"

Jin had checked his surroundings, even a few blocks away from the hiding spot. He made sure no one was there, and he even covered his tracks. He had no idea that the Aegis Corps knew where she was.

It took him a few months to pinpoint her location. But that was mainly because of his body developing his magical power.

"Dammit. My easy mode life is now ruined!" He lay on his bed, wondering where everything went wrong

"Oh, calm down, it's not like you're dying or anything," Oculia said, sitting on his window frame.

"What was that? I swore the wind started talking to me. But that's not possible. The wind can't speak or blackmail someone."

"I'm not blackmailing you," she said, climbing through the window, shutting it behind her, and settling onto his bed.

"Really? So what are you doing?"

"I'm convincing you very intently." She rubbed her hand in his hair.

"Wow, I feel much better."

"How did you do that, by the way, your powers? Were you born with them?"

Jin sat up and looked her dead in the eyes. "I was born in a patriarchal world, and then was taken by two supreme beings. I had to undergo 500 reincarnations into 500 different worlds, some more advanced than this, others with magic, and some without. After getting tired of it, I wanted to go back to my old world, but then I accidentally summoned myself into this one."

"Jeez. If you don't want to tell me, then just say so."

"Right..."

"Listen, Jin, I'm not going to report you to the higher-ups. Those women are determined to keep men from being born with abilities. But you're an anomaly—you could upset the balance of the world. There are already organizations and cults devoted to wiping out espers entirely."

He rolled his eyes. It was genetically impossible for men to obtain powers anyway. "And what does that have to do with me?"

"Even though you were careful, you were still spotted by me today. You're lucky it was me who spotted you and not someone else. Imagine if you were reported? You would be killed, and that's the best-case scenario."

"So you want me to be on the inside where I have you, Aunty, and Brittany with me?"

She smiled. "Yes. It will be easier to keep your powers hidden, especially since technology can mimic them to a degree."

"You make good points, but I've kept my power hidden for eight years already." He remembered that there was one person who actually caught him using them, but he decided to keep that to himself.

"You've had your powers since you were ten?!" She stood up, lifting Jin into the air by his shoulders.

"Yes. Got them when my parents died."

Her eyes lit up as if she finally understood something. "Wow! No wonder you were always better than your male peers."

"Ha, no. I would be better than them even without my powers."

"I like your confidence."

"Yeah, me too. Can you put me down, please?"

Oculia sat him back down on the bed.

He thought about what to ask next. "What will you do if I don't join?"

"I'll tell Anyssa and Brittany."

"Figures." He sighed. "Fine, I'll join. Just leave me alone. I have to wallow in my sorrows now."

"Haha! I'll see you tomorrow. Don't be late." She jumped out of his window and went to her car, which was parked down the street.

'Dammit. I can't even scramble her mind. That trick only works on the weak-willed. And honestly, I'm not strong enough to do that yet. Fuck my life.'

---

"Brittany, put me down. You're embarrassing us both." Jin was far from thrilled to be perched on her shoulders as she carried him to the front entrance of the Aegis Corps registration branch.

"No way! I've been trying to convince you for years to join the Guardians. I'm so excited for you!"

"So you have to carry me like this? While flying?"

She didn't even hesitate. "Absolutely! I have to show you off!"

"Like a trophy? Ugh, whatever." Eventually, they landed and walked inside

"U-Um, hello, are you here to sign up for the Aegis Corps?" A male receptionist asked

"I'm not, this guy here is, though." Brittany finally put Kai down and allowed him to speak.

"Hey, I'm Jin Telagard. I'm here to sign up."

"Wonderful! Do you have any experience dealing with criminals, monsters, or working in this field?" The receptionist asked

"Uhh, I went to the Aegis Academy. Does that count?" He asked

"It absolutely does!"

The Aegis Academy was built to train the next generation of Vanguards and Guardians. Even those not aiming to join the Aegis Corps often enrolled. Daughters were sent to master their powers, and sons to learn how to defend themselves.

Jin attended the Aegis Academy since daycare and was always at the top of his class, even before getting his memories back. He assumed his soul was working on autopilot.

"I just pulled up your file. Because of your stellar grades and performances, you don't have to register or take the entrance exam. All you need to do is show up for your first day. I have changed your file from 'Non Attending' to 'Attending'. Boot camp starts tomorrow."

"Hahaha! You're an initiate now! How does it feel?!" Brittany put Jin in a headlock and gave him a noogie.

"Feels great, can't wait."

"You don't sound excited."

"Really now?" Jin asked sarcastically.

"Don't get smart with me! You wanna be floating in the sky while we walk back home, huh?" Brittany's powers were Teleportation, Telekenesis, and Telepathy.

Jin had asked her if she was a member of the Tomorrow People, but she had no idea what he was talking about, so his joke fell flat.

"How about you throw me this time, huh? Spice things up and make it more exciting." Of course, he was joking, but Brittany found that funny.

"Okay!" She ran out of the building and launched Jin into the air like a football.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

"Haha! Look at him go!" Right before he was out of sight, she teleported into the air, grabbed Jin, and held him like a princess as she flew back home.

"Mwah! That was fun, wasn't it?" She kissed him on the cheek.

"I'm telling your mother."

"W-Wait! You don't have to go that far!"
