Chapter 9 - Selene Daven

Evelyn got out of the taxi and paid without intending to have the driver wait because she wasn't sure exactly when Selene would land.

After waiting for about ten minutes, she got Lenny's call that the plane already touched down.

Evelyn headed to the waiting area and waited. She texted Selene where she was and lowered her head to scroll through her phone not knowing that she had become the subject of admiration.

Many who walked passed would slow down to take a closer look at the girl. Her smooth forehead and perfectly carved eyebrows accentuated her small nose.

A man unconsciously wanted to approach her when a scream tore through the crowd. The girl raised her eyes and her eyes lit up.

The crowd parted as another girl ran over and jumped into her embrace.

"Evie I missed you so much!"

Evelyn struggled to catch Selene but her strength wasn't enough and they both tumbled onto the ground. Both women looked at each other and burst out laughing before helping each other up.

Selene observed Evelyn carefully for any traces of depression but found that she looked even better than before. She clicked her tongue twice.

"Evil men are really the bane of good women."

Evelyn didn't respond, silently showing her stance. She helped Selene drag one of her suitcases while holding the cakes in her other hand.

"You came early than I thought."

Selene shrugged.

"I picked the earliest flight after our phonecall. There's no way I would let you face something like this on your own."

Evelyn's heart felt warm.

"Thank you Lenny."

Selene didn't think much about it.

"What are friends for?"

They both dragged two large suitcases to the entrance and waited for a taxi.

Selene felt even more disdainful towards Nathan.

"He couldn't even bear to part with one car?"

Evelyn was unbothered.

"I don't like any of the models in his garage anyways. They're all so ugly, there's no way I'll drive any of that. And I didn't want his driver hovering over me either "

Selene thought of Evelyn's peculiar car aesthetics and felt like it made sense.

After waiting for a short while, they managed to catch a taxi. The bags were loaded into the boot and both girls got into the backseat.

The driver asked for the address and Selene reported the address of her apartment.

Although she hadn't been back in years, the place had always been under Evelyn's care so she wasn't worried it would be inhabitable.

They got down and paid. The driver even helped them move the bags to the door.

Evelyn took put the key from under the flower pot and they opened the door.

The house was clean without a single speck of dust. The air was fresh as well although a bit heavy but it wasn't damp and musty.

It wasn't at all like a house that had not been loved in for years and Selene knew this was all thanks to Evelyn.

They opened the windows and aired out the rooms before settling in the living room.

Evelyn dropped the cakes on the dinning for later.

The refrigerator was empty so they went to the convenience store in the community and bought food and cooking ingredients. Evelyn was in charge of rolling the cart while Selene picked out the ingredients.

Evelyn was happy with this arrangement as she wouldn't know what to pick anyways. She was a famous kitchen killer. The food she cooked might look beautiful but it was never edible.

After several failed trials, she simply gave up and told herself that cooking was simply not her strong forte.

They checked out and carried several big bags back to the apartment where Selene placed them all in order.

Evelyn wasn't all that hungry yet and neither was Selene so both women who had never had the problem of having to watch their weights took out a bag of chips, some soda crackers and two cans of fruit juice to pair with the cakes then sat directly on the floor.

Selene took a sip of her drink.

"Okay, spill. What exactly are the details of what happened between you and Nathan?"

Evelyn shrugged, noncommittal.

"He seems to have a sweetheart or something before getting married to me. They were together since we were in college and their relationship continued even after our marriage."

Selene could help but frown. Nathan was really an asshole for wanting to eat from the pot and the plate.

"Do you know this woman?"

Evelyn shook her head. She didn't think she examined the photos long enough but she was sure that wasn't a familiar face.

She opened the photos on her phone and passed it to Selene.

Selene looked at the pictures and was utterly disgusted. Men. They all think with their lower bodies. But soon enough, something else attracted her attention.

She narrowed her eyes and looked at that face and could be sure it was who she thought it was.

"F*ck!"

Evelyn looked at her.

"What is it?"

Selene passed the phone back to her.

"You say you really don't know this woman?"

Selene shook her head again but with much less convinction this time. She was sure she had never seen that face before.

Selene saw her like this and knew that she really didn't remember.

"It's Rhea Hayes! That girl from the drama department who always liked to copy you in everything. My skin still crawls when I think about it. Do you remember now?"

Evelyn thought hard and realized that this person seemed to exist? It had been so long ago and she never considered this woman important so she didn't even remember her face.

"I think I know her now. She's the one who would always bump into us at random times and start acting like we bullied her or something right?"

Selene slapped her legs twice

"Yes! That's the one. I never thought she hooked up with Nathan so far back."

Evelyn also found it incredible. This girl likes to emulate her in everything and she heard people say countless times how much they resembled but it only made her disgusted because she knew the girl was doing it on purpose.

She didn't have much interaction with this person but she was sure she was extremely vain and could not pass up on the chance to be Mrs Hale. So why has she been Nathan's mistress without saying anything?

"It's a bit weird though. I don't think she hooked up with Nathan in thoughts of being a mistress. Why didn't she leave when he married me instead? Or at least told me about their relationship?"

Selene looked at her as though saying you're still too innocent for this world.

"With the kind of benefits Nathan can provide for her, it doesn't really matter if she's the wife or not. As long as she's his woman. Besides, she probably knows how he treats you and is just happy to be riding over your head while you remain unaware."

This was another thing Evelyn didn't understand. She didn't think she offended this Rhea in any way before but the girl targeted her inexplicably.

"Is she just planning to keep on being his side piece for life? If I didn't find out now would this farce have continued?"

Selene shrugged. She wasn't very clear on how people like those think.

"She is making it in life so I don't know. She's a big star in the entertainment industry and many people look up to her as a goddess."

Evelyn didn't know this. She never paid attention to the entertainment industry and she wasn't one to chase stars either.

Before she could speak, her phone started ringing. She took it out and sneered softly. Selene mouthed a name and she nodded, to which the other woman rolled her eyes.

Evelyn smiled faintly and picked up the call.

"Hello?"

Nathan's voice came from the other side slightly panting. She had thought his voice was suave and charming but now she just found it greasy.

"Baby have you seen Selene? It's almost time for dinner do you want me to send the driver?"

Evelyn didn't hesitate to decline.

"No need. I'm spending the night with Xingue today. I'll come find you at your office tomorrow okay."

He agreed and she ended the call. Selene looked at her weirdly.

"He doesn't know yet?"

Evelyn smiled.

"Nope."

"What are you going to find him for tomorrow?"

Evelyn tilted her head slightly.

"Give him the divorce papers of course."

Selene couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"You're really my friend. Evie, I missed you alot."

Evelyn hummed softly.

"I missed you too Lenny."
