Nathan thought divorce was just Evelyn's angry words. He thought it was just a ploy to get his attention. He thought she would never dare to act on it. He thought she loved him too much to actually leave.
And that was why he was stunned speechless when he was served a notice from the court informing him to come for mediation.
Coincidentally, his mother came by to visit when he opened the mail. His shocked expression must have been too obvious because she came over and snatched the paper from him.
Her face turned dark the moment she saw the contents and she started cursing.
"Divorce? Who does she think she is? It's her good fortune that she can marry into our family and she's not contented?"
Nathan didn't know what to say and just watched his mother rattling off. He didn't feel like there was anything wrong with her words. Mo Shengsheng loved him so much, should she not be satisfied being his wife?
He gave her a home, the husband of her dreams and never treated her badly in terms of money. What more could she want?
Lydia Hale spewed off in anger and saw that her precious son was still dazed. She felt sorry for him and immediately called Evelyn.
Evelyn's schedule had been messed up these few days and she no longer followed her former pattern.
She was still half asleep when her phone's ringing pulled her out. She stretched out her hand and reached for her phone with clumsy moves.
She answered and placed it against her ear.
"Hello?"
Lydia who heard her voice knew that she must still be in bed. This person still had the mind to sleep while her son was suffering.
"So you have the guts to sleep? See what trouble you have caused. Nate isn't even acting like himself anymore. Evelyn, will you not be satisfied until you drag this family down?"
Evelyn's groggy brain cleared up a bit and she sat up, leaning against the headboard.
"That's why I decided to leave. After the divorce takes effect, your Liu family matters will have nothing to do with me anymore."
Lydia like her blood pressure would rise. When had Evelyn never spoken to her politely? This was completely disregarding her identity as a mother-in-law.
"Your wings have really hardened right? What kind of quarrel can a married couple have that can't be resolved. You're being too hot-headed."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. This mother-in-law who had never liked her was acting in a surprising manner.
She had assumed that this lady would be the happiest person after hearing the news but it could be told from her voice that she really didn't want her to divorce Nathan.
If someone told Evelyn there wasn't some kind of conspiracy here, she wouldn't believe it.
Lydia saw that she wasn't saying anything and decided to change tactics. It must be because they're talking on the phone that Evelyn was acting bravely. In her face, that girl could only do whatever she said.
She softened her voice.
"Evie dear, how about we meet in person and talk about it. Nathan is really affected by what is going on. I don't know what he did to you but even if you don't want to see him, at least talk to mother about it."
Evelyn felt goosebumps rise on her skin. She knew these people weren't up to any good. But curiousity got the best of her. She wanted to see what this woman could possibly say to convince her.
"Okay. Where do you want to meet?"
Lydia's lips spread in a confident smile.
"Oh I don't want to stress you too much. There's a small cafe around Yutong's company, how about we meet there by 2 pm?"
Evelyn thought that with where she was living now, that place was a one hour drive away but she didn't say anything in refute to Lydia's words.
"Okay then, I'll see you there."
The call was hung up and Evelyn sighed. The one thing she had always wanted to get was her mother-in-law's approval but it was as though that was not meant to be and this woman would always find opportunities to make jabs at her.
She didn't know how or where she offended this mother-in-law but she tried her best to make herself more submissive in hopes that her mother-in-law would finally approve of her.
This only made the woman become more unscrupulous. Evelyn probably knew why she wanted to meet in person. To use her identity as a mother-in-law to pressure her.
But Evelyn no longer considered her a mother-in-law. To her, that woman was only Nathan's mother. And with how much she disliked Nathan now, she would definitely not be polite to his mother.
She got out of bed and waddled to the living room where Selene was busy making breakfast-lunch.
She didn't even turn around from the pot.
"You're awake. Sit down and wait a few minutes, the food will soon be ready."
Evelyn sat down and waited patiently.
"Lydia called me today."
Selene snorted.
"That b*stards mother? What does she want?"
Evelyn held onto a mug of warm water to heat up her hands.
"She said she wants to meet."
Selene scrambled the eggs and plated them, then took out the toasted bread.
"For what? To show her majesty as a mother-in-law to you?"
Evelyn couldn't help but laugh.
"Probably. But she'll be in for a surprise. I'm not longer the Evelyn who was married to Nathan. I'm just Evelyn now."
Selene placed the dishes on the table and then gave her a round of applause.
"Bravo!! You have to show them why your name was so famous back then. They must think that being married must've diluted your temper or something."
Evelyn smiled softly. While younger, she was thin and weak due to her constitution and some other kids thought she was an easy target to bully.
She was given the nickname crazy Evie after dealing with them. No one bothered her after that.
She cleaned up her plate and took them to the kitchen for washing. Evelyn Hale had been online for so long that they seemed to have forgotten crazy Evie still exists.
