The next day, Selene dragged Evelyn to the mall to pick out clothes. She had always favoured bold hot clothes with bright colours while Evelyn preferred pastel colours with mild designs.
When Evelyn went to try out her dress, Selene saw a hot red dress hanging in the display cabinet. It had a crisscrossed open back and a a spaghetti strap sleeve.
Her eyes lit up and she immediately asked the attendant to bring it out. The attendant brought out the dress but before she could reach for it, it was snatched by someone from behind.
"Yo isn't this Selene? I thought you'd die in a foreign country"
She turned around and her expression froze slightly before returning to normal.
"Return the clothes to me."
The person smiled with obvious malice gleaming in her eyes.
"You haven't paid for it yet so it's not yours. Isn't that right?"
She looked towards the attendant who lowered her head.
When Aurora saw the attendants attitude, she became even more bold.
"What are you doing back here Selene? Hum? Aren't you satisfied with your life? Why come back?"
She was about to go crazy. Just when Lucas was finally starting to warm up to her, Selene came back. She wouldn't believe if someone told her it wasn't intentional.
Before Selene could answer, a voice cut in from behind.
"I didn't know the whole of this country belonged to you Miss Kensington that you're so comfortable telling someone not to come back."
Aurora gritted her teeth and turned to see Evelyn coming out. She paused for a second. She had to admit, Evelyn was really beautiful. But who made her this sl*ts friend?
"Dear Evie, how about you mind your business and don't get involved in our conversation."
Evelyn had walked over with calm footsteps.
"Her business is my business. You should know that by now."
One thing Aurora hated was having to look up to those she disliked. And at 162, Mo Shengsheng who was 172 definitely towered over her. Although Su Xinyue was taller as well at 169, she could always make up for it with heels.
She huffed and turned around to leave abruptly, throwing the dress and the attendant had to catch it in the air.
Evelyn looked at her back in confusion. Her impression of Aurora was that she was spoiled and out of touch with reality but she didn't know she had beef with Selene.
As someone who got married at around the same time, there was a lot of comparison about the two weddings and Evelyn heard that Aurora gave her inlaws hell for not making the wedding as lavish as hers.
She shook her head and turned to Selene who still looked shaken. Normally, Selene wouldn't need her to say a word before dealing with any trouble causing people but Evelyn could tell there was something wrong this time.
The attendant walked over timidly and presented the dress.
"Miss Daven, here is the dress."
Selene looked at her deeply then scoffed.
"No need."
As a company under Vie, this mall was notorious for protecting it's employees against unreasonable customers.
If she had wanted to, the attendant could have clearly spoken up as her company would definitely protect her but she didn't. And it was simply because she wanted to curry favor with Aurora.
Selene was too lazy to pay attention to people like these. Yes, everyone would watch out for their own interests and she would do the same. Now that Aurora had touched it, the dress didn't even look attractive to her anymore.
Evelyn didn't say a word and let her handle it by herself. She took the one dress she picked out and checked it out then they both left.
After getting to the apartment, Evelyn wasted no time in interrogating Selene.
"Do you mind telling me what the deal with Aurora is?"
Selene hesitated for a second then laughed. But Evelyn couldn't laugh along because she could feel the raw pain hidden in that laugh.
"I had a boyfriend. We dated from my freshman year till graduation."
Evelyn knew about that. Selene had a secret boyfriend who's identity even she didn't know until they broke up but hearing this now, gave her a bag feeling.
Selene continued.
"He said we couldn't let anyone know about our relationship but I didn't want to hide anything from you so I told you I was dating someone but didn't tell you who it was. I thought he would propose after graduation but what awaited me was the news of his upcoming wedding. I confronted him but he had nothing to say. I felt like an utter fool."
Evelyn also remembered this. She had asked Selene if she would like to have a double wedding but Selene only mentioned casually that she had broken up with her boyfriend.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know"
Selene smiled.
"It's okay it's not your fault. Anyways, it's not a long story. That man is Aurora's husband Lucas Ashford. Somehow, she found out about our relationship and came over to warn me with a high and mighty attitude. By then, I already knew and had broken off things with Lucas so I didn't care too much about her words but I felt terrible either the way so after your wedding, I immediately ran abroad. I'm quite the coward aren't I?"
Evelyn immediately pulled her into her arms gently rubbing her hair while she broke down in soft sobs.
"You're the strongest woman I know, I won't allow you to call yourself a coward. The most cowardly one here is Lucas who dared to make promises but couldn't take responsibility when they time came."
In a way, they were both the same. Deceived by men.
Selene laughed softly through her tears.
"I really hoped yours would be different. I hoped Nathan would treat you well for the rest of your lives but it's as though fate decided to play a cruel joke on us both."
Evelyn couldn't help but laugh as well. That much was true.
"It's okay we have each other now. And that's what matters."
Selene hummed softly.
"Yeah."
