Chapter 17 - The Silent Star

The light in the diamond hall seemed to breathe.

Ezra stood before the display again, gaze fixed on the smoky gem.

It didn't shine like the others — it listened. The faint pulse inside it beat steady, rhythmic, alive.

"I'll take it," he said finally.

The attendant blinked. "Sir?"

"The one in the center," Ezra repeated, pointing toward the small pedestal. "The Type IIa. The Silent Star."

The attendant hesitated — professional, but uncertain. "That's a collector's stone, sir. Rare grade. It can't be worn directly, but we can set it for you."

"That's what I want," Ezra said. He reached into his jacket and drew out the golden locket he always carried — plain, aged, its hinges dulled from years of touch. "I want it fixed inside this. Not replaced — joined."

The man turned the locket over in his gloved hand, nodding thoughtfully. "It'll take time. The structure's delicate, and this locket… well, it's handcrafted gold. We'll have to reinforce it from the inside. A minimum of ten days."

"That's fine," Ezra said. "Just make sure it stays mine."

When he turned, Mellody was watching him — arms folded, an amused smile tugging at her lips.

"You're seriously buying an ancient locket upgrade," she teased. "In a store full of platinum and tech-encrusted jewelry, you choose… that?"

He smirked faintly. "Old things have a soul. New ones just have polish."

"Romantic or stubborn?"

"Ah.....just my Soul," he said, handing over the receipt to the attendant.

Mellody shook her head, laughing softly. "Then I suppose I'll need something to match your antique taste." She turned toward another display — the emerald section.

Her eyes caught on a bright green ring — simple, elegant, its stone clear as spring water. When she slipped it onto her finger, the color seemed to mirror the calm in her eyes.

"It suits you," Ezra said quietly.

"It should," she replied, admiring the reflection. "It's the first thing I've bought as Mrs. Ezra."

He smiled at that, watching the way the light flickered across the ring, almost alive.

But beneath the warmth, something in his head pulsed faintly — a rhythm that wasn't his own. The Silent Star. Still beating somewhere behind his eyes.

A small tremor of dizziness hit him. The sound of chatter in the hall stretched and distorted for a second. The air thickened.

Mellody looked up immediately. "Ezra? You okay?"

"Yeah," he said, forcing a faint laugh. "Just need a minute. I'll—uh—go wash my face."

He gestured toward the restroom. She nodded, though concern flickered across her calm expression.

"Hurry back," she said softly. "I'll finish the payment."

He smiled faintly. "Don't run away with the ring."

"Not without you," she replied, a quiet tease that almost hid the shadow in her tone.

He turned down the hallway toward the restrooms, the polished floor reflecting him in long, broken fragments. Each step echoed louder than the last. And in the corner of every reflection, the faint glimmer of a gray diamond pulsed — soft, rhythmic, breathing.
