Chapter 20 - The Name You Shouldn’t Speak

The night passed heavy and strange.

When Ezra finally drifted into sleep beside Mellody, her breathing soft and steady against the storm outside, the darkness felt almost kind—until the dream began.

A road again. Wet. Dim.Headlights flaring through rain. A woman—pregnant, terrified—stumbling on the slick asphalt. The horn screamed, tires shrieked.

He saw the moment the car hit—metal folding, a sound like the world cracking—and the impact landed square across her swollen belly. Her scream tore through him.

He jolted awake, chest heaving, sweat dampening the sheets. The room was bright—sunlight cutting through curtains.

He looked at the clock. 10:00 A.M.

He can't belive the night went fast.

Mellody still slept, her face peaceful, untouched by whatever storm had shredded his dream. He slid out of bed quietly, trying not to wake her.

Downstairs, the house felt wrong.

Miller sat at the table, staring at his coffee cup as though it contained answers he'd forgotten how to read. Rosey moved back and forth from the counter to the sink, motion slow, detached, as if she were following invisible instructions.

"Morning," Ezra said softly.

No answer.They just… moved.

He stepped closer. "Mom? Dad?"

Still nothing—only the faint sound of water running, the scrape of a spoon against ceramic. Their eyes looked awake but empty, like something behind them had stepped out.

A chill threaded up his spine. He backed away slowly, heart pounding.

Outside, the city looked normal. Almost.

Rainwater shimmered in gutters, traffic rolled on, people hurried by—but there was a stillness underneath, like the pause between two notes.

He walked aimlessly, needing noise, people, proof that he wasn't alone in this blank space pretending to be a world.

A few blocks down, the scent of grilled bread drifted from a small corner café. He pushed the door open, the bell chiming softly.

"Good morning," the barista said, smiling mechanically. "What can I get you?"

"Uh—cheeseburger," Ezra muttered, scanning the counter. "And coffee. Black."

She tapped the register. "Name for the orders?"

"Ezra," he said automatically.

And then—silence.

The hum of the refrigerator stopped. The street outside froze. Every head in the café turned toward him.Eyes widened, mouths stilled mid-word.

Ezra felt the air thicken, pressing against his skin. "What…?"

From somewhere near the window, a child's voice whispered, trembling, "You weren't supposed to say your name."

He turned. A little boy stood by the door, clutching a half-melted ice cream, eyes wide with fear.

"What?" Ezra asked, voice cracking. "What do you mean?

The boy took a step back. "You said it out loud. You shouldn't have."

Ezra's heart hammered. "What are you talking about? I'm Ezra! I just—"

The sound of his own name seemed to bend the air, like glass under heat. The lights flickered once, twice.

He swallowed hard, scanning the frozen faces around him. "What's happening to everyone? What's happening to the world?"

No one answered. The boy just stared at him, eyes wet, voice a whisper barely audible through the stillness.

"You woke it up."

Ezra asked him "Ah...gh...Who?."

Then the boy replied "Everyone!."

He steps backs little by little. A ten-feet away from everyone.

Then everyone wisphers his name. "Ezra....Ezra....Ezra....Ezra....Ezra....Ezra....Ezra....".

Then the wispher stopped.

Finally the boy screams. "NOWWWW!".

"Review it. Power Stone it".

"If you wanna know what's behind the NOWWWW!."
