Chapter 18 - The Npxie City

The light in the jewelry hall was soft, almost reverent — gold, glass, and quiet voices.

Rosey lingered beside Mellody, admiring an emerald bracelet as the attendants moved delicately between displays. Sophie and Vale darted from counter to counter, whispering jokes that earned indulgent smiles from their parents.

Ezra stood a little apart, still thinking about the diamond — The Silent Star.

The name alone hummed in his mind like an echo that refused to fade.

When he returned from the restroom, he found Mellody, Rosey, and Sophie laughing softly at a counter, trying on rings. Vale was convincing Miller to buy something he'd never wear. It should have felt peaceful. It didn't.

"Everything alright?" Mellody asked when she saw him.

"Yeah," he said, forcing a smile. "Just checking something."

He opened his phone under the counter's warm light, typing quickly:Type IIa diamond "The Silent Star."

The screen blinked, loaded — and returned nothing. No images, no articles, no mention in any database.

He frowned, tried again — different keywords, different language, even switching to private archives. Still nothing. It was as if the diamond didn't exist outside this room.

Unease crept in, subtle but steady.

He turned to one of the attendants polishing a display nearby. "Excuse me," Ezra said quietly. "That diamond I just purchased — The Silent Star — where exactly did it come from?"

The attendant hesitated, then offered a practiced smile. "That particular piece came through a private channel, sir. It wasn't mined through the usual trade lines."

"Then from where?"

The man glanced toward the manager — a gray-haired jeweler who stepped forward smoothly, tone measured. "It came to us through an independent source, Mr. Graves. A retired archaeologist who brought a small set of unregistered stones from Npxie City, in the East."

Ezra's brow furrowed. "Never heard of it."

The jeweler nodded slowly. "Most haven't. It's an abandoned excavation region — what locals call the old 'City of the Gods of Fire.' Supposedly the birthplace of some forgotten civilization. The collector claimed he found the stones buried under volcanic ash."

"Volcanic?"

"Yes, sir. Quite ancient strata, by the looks of it."

Rosey, overhearing, frowned faintly. "That sounds… unsafe, doesn't it? You're sure it's not radioactive or something?"

The jeweler chuckled politely. "I assure you, madam, it's safe. Just a relic with a peculiar story. Some things from old soil carry a bit of mystery, that's all."

"Right," Ezra said softly, his eyes flicking back toward the diamond's display. "Mystery."

By the time the paperwork was done, Mellody had chosen her own treasure — a bright green ring that gleamed like captured spring. Rosey smiled approvingly, Sophie took pictures, and Miller joked about taking a loan from Mellody's company.

They walked out of the store together, laughter echoing through the corridor.

The sky outside was turning amber, the last of the sunlight catching on wet pavement. Ezra carried the receipt for the locket modification in his pocket, the words repeating in his head: ten days.

Rosey slipped her arm through his. "You're quiet again, love. You alright?"

"Yeah," Ezra said, eyes drifting toward the skyline. "Just tired."

"Big day," Mellody said gently beside him. "Let's get everyone home."

The car ride back was warm — chatter, jokes, plans. Sophie scrolled through photos, Vale exaggerated stories, Rosey hummed quietly to a tune on the radio. It should've felt safe. It almost did.

But as Ezra looked out through the car window, the reflection of the city lights rippled strangely — each flash bending and pulsing like a heartbeat in glass.

He blinked. The world steadied.

And yet, beneath that fragile calm, something deep in him whispered —Ten days.

Ten days until the locket returned.Ten days until the Silent Star came home.
