Chapter 16 - The Diamond’s Eye

The car glided through the heart of the city, sunlight flashing off towers of glass and chrome.

By the time they reached the jewelry arcade, the afternoon had turned golden, the streets thrumming with the hush of wealth.

Mellody stepped out first, her composure drawing quiet glances from bystanders. Even among polished marble and mirrors, she looked like she belonged there — calm, regal, untouchable.

Ezra followed, still unused to the kind of world that gleamed this much. Sophie gasped as they entered through the tall, glass doors.

The store shimmered — walls of light and velvet, displays of gold and silver that caught every breath of movement.

"Welcome to Aurora Jewel & Co., sir, madam," the attendant greeted.

Miller smiled, gesturing to the glittering hall. "Your mother's idea. Honeymoon needs memories that last."

Rosey nudged him gently. "And because your father still thinks diamonds fix everything."

Laughter followed. Even Mellody's lips curved faintly.

They started at the gold section — intricate designs in warm light, bracelets that gleamed like trapped sunsets. Mellody studied them with calm interest while Sophie and Rosey debated patterns in excited voices.

Then the platinum section — pale, cool, almost moonlike. Ezra turned a ring over between his fingers, the surface catching his reflection and splitting it into two faint faces.

"Not your style?" Mellody asked quietly, appearing beside him.

"It's beautiful," he said, setting it down carefully. "Just feels… distant."

"Platinum always does," she replied. "It's too perfect to feel human."

At the far end of the gallery, a sign glowed faintly above an arched doorway:"The Diamond Hall — Authorized Access Only."

An attendant bowed slightly as they approached. "Would you care to see our private diamond collection, sir? The rare pieces are not on public display."

Miller waved a hand. "Go on, Ezra. Take a look. I'll keep your mother from buying the entire store."

Ezra nodded and followed the attendant through. The hall grew quieter, the air cooler, lights dimmed to protect the gems. Rows of crystal cases stretched before him, each one holding stones that seemed to breathe with their own light.

The attendant spoke softly. "Every diamond here is certified rare — the purest clarity, the deepest cut. Some are one-of-a-kind."

Ezra drifted past them slowly. The diamonds didn't sparkle; they watched. Their light didn't reflect — it burned inward, pulling his gaze deeper.

He stopped before a small display in the center.

Inside, under a single focused beam, lay a diamond unlike the others — not bright, not colorless, but faintly gray, almost smoky. Yet at its heart, a point of white pulsed, alive, rhythmic, like a heartbeat trapped in crystal.

The placard read:

"Type IIa – The Silent Star."

Something about it felt wrong. Not cursed — just awake.

He leaned closer. For a moment, the light inside the gem flickered — and he could've sworn it pulsed in time with his own heartbeat.

His reflection shimmered faintly in the glass. Then — blink.

The reflection moved before he did.

Ezra stepped back sharply, nearly hitting the railing behind him. His pulse quickened. The attendant turned, startled.

"Are you alright, sir?"

"I—yeah. Just dizzy," Ezra muttered, rubbing at his eyes. "It's… too bright in here."

The attendant nodded politely. "Take your time. The Silent Star affects some viewers that way. Its structure bends light unusually — some say it almost feels alive."

Ezra looked one last time. The diamond was still. Just a stone.

And yet, as he walked back toward the exit, he felt it — faint, persistent — a pulse in the back of his skull, echoing with every step.

Outside, Mellody glanced up from a case of rings as he approached. "Find anything?"

He forced a faint smile. "Something found me."

She raised a brow, amused. "That's an interesting answer."

"Yeah," he murmured, staring past her reflection in the glass wall — at the faint afterimage of a gray diamond still glowing somewhere behind his eyes.
