Stephanie's POV
I was getting dressed when I felt Cane's eyes on me. He sat at the edge of the bed, his eyes glued to me, mirroring my every move. He looked serious, as if he was sending me off to war. He's been like that since I got the call from the Dario's family.
"You're staring," I said, pulling a soft sweater over my head. "You're making me feel like I'm walking to my death."
"That's exactly how it feels," he muttered, voice low and rough. There wasn't even a hint of a smile on his face.
I don't mean to but I found myself laughing at his antics. "Cane, it's just lunch with my "grandparents". They're old, not assassins. Besides, I'm the only one left to keep their precious family name alive. They wouldn't hurt the only heir to their legacy now, would they?"
He only grumbled again, deep in his chest. It was so typical of him that I couldn't help laughing. He looked like a child who was being denied his favorite candy.
