Chapter 20 - Nothing Is The Same Anymore

A couple were busy preparing a party for their first wedding anniversary.

Once everything was ready, they lit the candles on the cake and blew them out. They hoped that this would be the first of many and that they would continue to do so in the years to come.

"Let's promise to celebrate it together every year!" said the wife with a bright smile.

The husband smiled softly and stroked her head. "I promise we will continue to celebrate it together forever. Because you are my first and last wife, Eve."

Evelyne smiled when she heard this and hugged her husband, Tristan, tightly. She felt so happy to be married to the man she had loved since they were teenagers.

"Next year, we won't be celebrating just the two of us, but I hope there will be a new member in our family," he said, rubbing her stomach.

Her chest felt so warm, her heart beating very fast when he touched her stomach. Imagining the day when they would have a child, she was sure they would raise that child together with love.

Happiness continued to fill her on that special day, never imagining that it wouldn't last long.

"Evelyne... Evelyne!"

When she woke up from her sleep, she heard her phone ringing, and it was a call from her boss, Tristan.

In the middle of her work, Evelyn fell asleep because she was exhausted from taking care of Luke all night. Her son had a fever.

Even as morning approached and she had to leave for work, her son was still sick, although his fever had gone down a little.

She asked Liliana to take care of Luke at home and not take him to daycare that day.

"Damn, I fell asleep," she muttered, then pressed a button on her phone.

"Y-yes, sir," replied Evelyne, who was still a little groggy because she had just woken up.

It turned out that the man wanted her to bring him a glass of ice water to his room. Evelyne rubbed her eyes, then stretched her body.

"Are you okay?" asked Isabella, who was sitting across from her. "You look very tired. Did you come home very late last night?"

"Yes, I came home at almost 10:00 p.m. last night. I'm a little tired," she replied.

She couldn't tell the truth that she hadn't slept at all last night. No one knew that Evelyne had a child, and it would be big news if they found out and Tristan heard about it.

She stood up from her seat, carrying her coffee cup to the kitchen. The woman waited until the coffee was finished brewing, then took some water with ice cubes as Tristan had requested.

"Ugh... My head hurts a little from not sleeping last night. Is his fever much better?" she muttered worriedly.

Actually, she didn't want to leave Luke at home with Liliana because from the beginning the boy had really wanted to be with her. But since his fever had gone down considerably, and she had a lot of work to do, she couldn't leave her job.

"I'm such a bad parent, leaving my son at home while I'm busy at the office," she said, complaining and regretting her decision.

But she would also regret not going to work because it could ruin Tristan's image and work schedule.

She brought the cold water to her boss's office and placed it on the table while the man was looking at his laptop.

"Is there anything else you need?" She asked.

"Yes," he replied, closing his laptop and looking at her. "I called you for more than 10 minutes, but you didn't answer my call."

Evelyne knew that at that time she must have been asleep at her desk, so she didn't realize that Tristan kept calling her on the phone on her desk.

She made the excuse that she was too focused on what was on her computer screen, so she didn't really notice the call.

However, of course, that excuse was not believable.

"Did you spend 10 minutes staring at your screen without hearing me calling you? Just tell me honestly, you fell asleep while working, right?" he asked firmly.

He knew this because Evelyne's hair was slightly messy. Hearing that her hair was messy, Evelyne reflexively looked at the full length mirror in the room and saw that her hair was indeed slightly messy.

Her face flushed with embarrassment, she quickly tidied her hair and stood back in front of him. Though it wasn't the only factor, Evelyne's expression did look like someone who had just woken up from sleep.

"Okay, I admit I fell asleep while working. I'm sorry about that, sir. I didn't get enough sleep last night, so I fell asleep at my desk," replied Evelyne, finally admitting it.

"Is it because of him that you couldn't sleep?" asked Tristan again as he drank his cold water and put it back on the table.

"Pardon?"

"I'm talking about Luke. Did he keep you awake all night so you didn't sleep?"

Her eyes widened when Tristan mentioned that name. She was afraid that he knew about Luke, and she was sure he must have heard about it from the phone call yesterday.

"What do you mean, sir?"

He explained that it might be the man named Luke who had kept Evelyne awake all night because they were engaging in activities on the bed or having sex.

She was even more shocked by his answer. But at the same time, she felt relieved because Tristan thought Evelyne had met a man named Luke.

'Good, he doesn't know that Luke is his son. Not for now, but that's much better,' she thought with relief.

However, she slowly began to feel a little offended by his words.

"I don't care about your personal affairs, Secretary Evelyne. But I hope your personal affairs in bed don't interfere with or hinder your work," he said.

She was quite offended because he thought she was a woman who played with other men in bed.

'Am I that low in your eyes now?' she thought angrily.

However, hadn't Tristan been thinking that all along? Ever since he accused her of cheating, Tristan must have thought that Evelyne had had sex with Daniel behind his back.

She could only sigh, too tired to argue.

"You're right. Maybe my personal life shouldn't interfere with my work," she said.

When Tristan was about to respond, she cut him off by continuing her sentence.

"Next time I'll ask him to stop at 2 a.m. so he can give me time to sleep after a long night of good sex."

She answered sarcastically and turned away without waiting for his response.

Evelyne was really annoyed, tired, and her head hurt so much.

As if her bad luck wasn't over yet, suddenly her phone rang and when she looked at it, it was Liliana calling.

Without further ado, she immediately answered the phone because she was sure something had happened to Luke at home.

"Ms. Evelyne, Luke's fever has risen again and is now very high. Plus, he also has a stomachache," said Liliana in a panic.

"What? How could that be? Then how is he now?" asked Evelyne, who was also panicking and very worried about her only son.

She didn't expect her son's fever to be that bad, especially now that it was compounded by stomach pain, which must be very painful for a 5 year old boy.

For a moment, Liliana didn't answer her question, but she could hear the commotion on the other line. Finally, Liliana replied after talking to someone.

"We're at the hospital."
