Chapter 22 - A Coincidence Or...

Evelyne rubbed her stomach because she felt sick since she hadn't eaten anything since noon. On top of that, she had been feeling anxious about her son, which made her stomach ache worse.

That's why she agreed when Daniel asked her to go to the hospital cafeteria to find something to eat. She hoped there would be some soup to warm her stomach.

They took the elevator down to the main floor because the cafeteria was located there. When the elevator doors opened, she was surprised to see two people inside.

It was Tristan and Victoria, who had just come down from the 4th floor. She didn't expect her boss and ex-husband to be in the hospital too. The last time she saw him was at the company.

Not only was she surprised, but Tristan was also shocked to see Evelyn there. Plus, she was with the man he had hated for a long time, Daniel.

His brown eyes immediately focused on Daniel's arm around her shoulder and her hand on her own stomach.

'They... Could it be...' Tristan thought suspiciously.

"Evelyne? What a coincidence that you're here. What are you guys doing?" asked Victoria, who then invited them both to quickly get into the elevator before the doors closed.

The two of them entered the elevator, and there was an awkwardness between Tristan, Evelyne, and Daniel. Meanwhile, Victoria was left in the dark, unaware of anything.

The innocent woman didn't even realize that the three people around her had a connection from the past.

"I didn't know you left the company, Secretary Evelyne. You didn't even say anything to me, didn't ask for permission or anything," said Tristan coldly, glancing sharply at her.

"I'm sorry about that, I was in a hurry so I forgot to do it. Besides, this is an emergency," she replied without looking at him.

"What kind of emergency do you have? I don't remember you having any family members who could be in an emergency at the hospital. Or did you come to accompany your lover?" Tristan asked again, this time much more pressingly.

It was as if he was interrogating her. Victoria, who heard this, felt that the atmosphere in the elevator had become very tense. They were even talking to each other very coldly, unlike usual.

"That's her personal business, Mr. Everhart. You have no reason to know what she's doing at the hospital." Daniel tried to help Evelyne. However, his words were easily refuted.

"Of course I have a reason to ask further questions. She's my secretary, she left the company and even her job without saying anything to me."

As the situation became increasingly tense, Victoria tried to break the tension.

"Come on, love. Evelyne could be sick. Look how pale she is. Maybe this gentleman is picking her up to take her to the hospital to get checked out," she said, trying to calm Tristan down.

"In the middle of work without a word?"

"Hey, anything can happen anywhere and anytime, right? Look at my sprained foot. I'm just a model," said the woman, pointing to her bandaged left foot.

Evelyne, who saw Victoria's bandaged left foot, immediately became concerned and asked what had happened. The woman said that while she was doing a photo shoot, she accidentally stepped on a cable, which caused her to fall and sprain her ankle.

That's why she was in the hospital because her manager took her there. Tristan, who heard this, immediately came to pick her up.

"Are you okay?" asked Evelyne.

"I'm fine! The doctor said my leg will heal in a few days. I just need to rest," she replied cheerfully.

She felt relieved to hear that Victoria would be okay in a few days. Not long after, the elevator doors opened, and they stepped out.

"Well, we should head home now. See you later, Evelyne," the woman said.

"Yes. See you again," she replied.

She turned to Tristan, who had been staring at her the whole time.

"I'll wait for your report tomorrow morning." That was all he said before finally carrying Victoria away from the hospital lobby.

Before that, he had stared intently at Daniel. But he immediately looked away.

Evelyne and Daniel went to the cafeteria, while Tristan took his fiancée home.

During the drive back to his mansion, he kept thinking about why Evelyne was at the hospital. He had noticed that Evelyne was not at her desk, and Isabella said that Evelyne had suddenly taken her bag and left without saying anything.

Her face also looked pale and tired, and he had noticed that she kept rubbing her stomach.

'Could she actually be... pregnant with that bastard's child?' Tristan thought suspiciously as he gripped the steering wheel tightly.

There was a mix of frustration and jealousy as he kept wondering if Evelyn was really pregnant with Daniel's child. Given the symptoms, maybe she felt nauseous, which is why she was rubbing her stomach.

Without him knowing, Evelyne was actually just experiencing stomach pain due to her recurring gastritis.

Victoria realized that her fiancé had been silent the whole time, staring at the street. Usually, they would chat on the way, talking about little things that might have been overlooked between them.

But not lately, and she kept holding back from asking him about it.

"The man who was with Evelyne earlier, is he her boyfriend?" asked Victoria.

That innocent question startled Tristan, as if he didn't like hearing it. He tried to remain silent, pretending not to hear her.

But she repeated her question, which made him angry and he answered by snapping at her.

"OF COURSE NOT!"

His loud shout startled Victoria so much that her eyes widened in surprise. At that moment, Tristan immediately regretted it and apologized to her.

"I'm sorry, baby. I didn't mean to yell at you. I just..."

"It's okay. You must be tired, and I... I was just bothering you with my questions," she replied.

He felt really guilty and answered her again with a softer tone.

"I don't know. I never knew anything about her personal life, she was just my secretary," he replied.

"They seem very close. That man's name is Daniel, right? He kept holding Evelyne so she wouldn't fall. I think she's tired and needs some rest," she said worriedly.

He vividly remembered how Daniel kept his arm around Evelyne's shoulder and pulled her closer when they were in the elevator.

That made Tristan truly believe that Evelyn had more than just a friendship with Daniel.

'And if she really is pregnant with his child... I...'

He sighed, trying to focus on the road ahead. He tried to push those thoughts aside because he should have realized it was no longer his concern, and Victoria was his future now, not Evelyne.

His grip on the steering wheel tightened, causing his knuckles to turn white.

"Fuck."
