Chapter 19 - It's Just Innocent Attention

Tristan sat waiting in his office when Evelyne left him to answer a phone call. For some reason, he felt curious. Who was calling her at this hour?

He looked out the small window next to his office door and saw Evelyne answering the phone, looking very serious. But worry was also written on her face, making him even more curious.

"Who is she talking to? She looks very serious."

The man wondered, was Evelyne talking to Daniel right now?

He slowly left his office and walked right behind her. Because the office on that floor was empty, and only some of the lights were on, Evelyne didn't notice Tristan walking towards her.

"Listen to me, Luke. I'll be home soon. Wait with Liliana, understand?"

'Luke? Who is Luke?' he wondered, who is Luke?

Did Evelyne find someone else who turned out not to be Daniel, but a man named Luke?

Without him knowing that Luke was actually the name of his own son, whom he never knew existed.

However, clueless Tristan assumed that Evelyne knew another man and was now going to meet him?

After calming him down, Evelyne hung up the phone from Liliana and intended to return to Tristan's office. However, when she turned around, she was startled by the man's presence.

"What are you... Are you eavesdropping on my conversation?" she asked defensively.

Because, of course, that would risk Tristan finding out about Luke, their son whose existence she had hidden from him since the beginning.

"I wasn't eavesdropping on your conversation. Why would I do that?"

Hearing that, she felt a little relieved, even though she didn't know if what he said was true or not. Since her work was done, she intended to go home. She took her bag from her desk.

However, Tristan grabbed Evelyne's arm and said he would take her home.

"It's very late now. I'll take you home," he said.

"No need, I can order a taxi."

"It will take time for the taxi to arrive. Do you want to wait outside alone this late?" asked the man, raising one eyebrow.

"If that's the case, so what? It's none of your business. Work hours are over, I can take care of myself."

As she was about to walk past him, Tristan grabbed her arm again. "Over my dead body. I'll drive you home in my car or I'll keep you at my office until tomorrow morning."

Hearing the threat, Evelyne had no choice but to follow him because she didn't want to argue too long. Considering Luke was waiting for her at home.

In the car, she glanced at Tristan, who was focused on the road ahead. Actually, she didn't want to talk about this, but she had to do it to confirm their relationship.

"Why are you doing this? Let me remind you that we are divorced, and there is no special relationship between us other than work," she said firmly.

"Yes, I know that." He replied briefly.

"Then why are you still doing this? You always insist on driving me home late at night. You even bought me dinner earlier. What does it all mean?"

At first, the man remained silent, until suddenly he stopped the car on the side of the road.

He turned to her, looking at her with a lazy gaze that also hid something behind it.

"The reason is simple. You are my secretary. And whatever happens to you is my responsibility. You could say that my schedule would be completely disrupted if something happened to you," he replied.

He added that everything he did was just an innocent excuse from a boss to his secretary.

There was no special reason, as Evelyne might be thinking at the moment. However, the woman wasn't stupid. She knew there was another reason he was doing this.

Especially since a few days ago he had hugged her so tightly in his office.

"Still, you have to keep your distance from me. I don't want any misunderstandings between us, especially if Vicky finds out," replied Evelyne, referring to Victoria.

Victoria was such a kind and friendly woman, she didn't want to make someone like Victoria feel offended or hurt by thinking that there was something between her and Tristan.

"I know that, but to me you are still my ex-wife. I can't let anything happen to someone I once loved," replied the man, sounding a little softer.

His answer was enough to create silence in the Lamborghini. She fell silent when she heard his reason.

But it wasn't strong enough to shake her, although it was enough to make her feel something.

"Can't you just be quiet and accept what I'm doing for you? At least if you still feel grateful that I'm willing to help you," he continued.

"Remember, I'm no longer your responsibility." She turned to him and looked into his eyes.

"You ruined our marriage yourself."

*****

When she arrived home, Evelyne opened the door and walked in, taking off her high heels. Her energy seemed to be completely drained from the conversation between her and Tristan in the car a few minutes ago.

As soon as she walked in, Luke ran toward her, crying. She hugged his legs, which only made her feel more shattered seeing her son like that.

"Mommy! Mommy!" He cried quite loudly.

As soon as she touched him, Evelyne realized that Luke had a fever. His body felt so hot, and she immediately picked up her son.

"Ms. Evelyne, you're finally home. Luke has had a fever since you hung up on me earlier. I asked him to lie down, but he refused," replied Liliana.

"Can you help me for a moment before you go home? I'll call a taxi for you," she replied, then took Luke to his room.

Liliana helped bring a bowl of water and a clean towel for Luke. Meanwhile, Evelyne helped him change his clothes and lay him down on the bed.

She took the clean towel and began to place it on his forehead.

"Mommy, don't go," he said weakly.

"Mommy is here, honey. Mommy won't go," she replied, gently stroking his head.

It turned out that Luke's tantrum was because he was feeling sick and wanted to be close to his mother.

"Ms. Evelyne, do you need anything else? I can help you take care of him. You must be tired after working all day," Liliana offered.

However, Evelyne didn't want to bother her and asked her to go home.

"I can take care of him myself. You go home and rest. Luke will be better tomorrow," she replied.

Hearing that, Liliana could only nod in understanding, then she went home in a taxi she had ordered.

All night long, Evelyne sat beside her son's bed, wiping away the sweat that kept pouring out. She held his hand so Luke would know his mother was always by his side.

"Mommy is here. Get some rest, love."
