Chapter 21 - Emergency Situation At The Hospital

At the hospital, Evelyne immediately searched for Luke and the others. She left the company without even telling Tristan first.

The woman was too panicked. She couldn't think straight and all she could think about was her son, who was now in the hospital.

With her hair disheveled from running, she was panting heavily when she saw Liliana and Daniel standing in front of one of the rooms.

"Where is Luke? How is he now?!"

"Evelyne, calm down first. Sit down for a moment and catch your breath," said Daniel, handing her a bottle of water.

He didn't want things to get worse when Evelyne heard the news about Luke. Especially since she was panicking and looked exhausted, she could faint from exhaustion and hearing the news about her son.

After she looked much calmer, Daniel began to explain what the doctor had told them.

"The doctor said Luke has an infection in his stomach. It could be from food or a virus, which is why he has a high fever and stomach pain," said Daniel.

They needed the family's permission to perform a minor surgery to save the child. That's why Liliana ended up calling Evelyne, even though she didn't intend to disturb her.

"I called Uncle Daniel first before finally calling you. He came right away and checked on him, then decided to take Luke to the hospital," Liliana explained.

The 19 year old girl also apologized to Evelyne, feeling that it must have been her fault for giving Luke something that caused him to get an infection in his stomach.

She even cried, apologizing for it, but Evelyne hugged her and said it wasn't necessarily her fault.

"For now, it's better for me to see the doctor and agree to this minor surgery to save my son. There's no time to apologize and feel guilty. This isn't anyone's fault," Evelyne replied.

She was actually grateful that Liliana had acted quickly to contact Daniel and finally take Luke to the hospital.

Even in a situation like this, she tried to remain calm and collected so as not to make an already bad situation even worse.

She then met with the doctor along with Daniel and discussed the surgery that Luke would undergo.

After all the agreements were approved, she signed the papers and the surgery began. During the surgery, she sat in the waiting room, praying that Luke would be okay.

"I'm sure everything will be fine. Luke is a strong boy. He'll get through this just fine." Daniel tried to reassure her so that Evelyne could calm down a little.

For three hours she waited, but she still didn't receive a message from Tristan. On one hand, she felt relieved, but on the other, she also felt worried because she had just left the company without telling him. What if she was suddenly fired?

She had already spent a lot of money on Luke's surgery. If she lost her job, how would they survive?

"Daniel," she called out, making him immediately turn and look at her.

"Do you think I'm a bad mother? I left my son at daycare all day, then at night I left him with Liliana. When he needed me, I wasn't there for him because I was too busy with my work," she said in a soft voice filled with sadness and guilt.

"What do you mean? You're an amazing mother to him. Even though you're not by his side, I'm sure he understands because he knows you're working for his future," Daniel replied.

"But he shouldn't have to understand this! He shouldn't have to grow up too soon. He should be busy playing and learning. He should want his parents by his side."

She felt so guilty, thinking that what happened today might be because of her negligence, being too busy with work and not noticing that her son had contracted an infection.

"I kept his existence a secret from his father, distancing him without telling him who he was. And now, to make matters worse, I wasn't there for him when he needed me," said the woman in frustration.

The wall of her composure seemed to crumble instantly as she thought about what had happened to him today.

"I understand that you blame yourself. But this isn't your fault. You had good reasons for everything. And as for Tristan... You yourself said that the situation no longer allowed them to meet each other," Daniel said softly, holding her hand.

What the man said was true. She tried to believe him, but something inside her continued to bother her.

After waiting for a long time, the surgery was finally over and everything went smoothly.

"The decision we made was the right one. We were almost too late to perform the surgery, but luckily the boy is fine," said the doctor, making Evelyne feel relieved.

"Can I see him now?"

"For now, he's still under the influence of anesthesia, so he's still sleeping soundly. You can see him after the nurse moves him to the regular ward," the doctor replied, to which Evelyne nodded in response.

The doctor then left them. She continued to give thanks while wiping her tears. Her face still looked very tired, and Daniel was worried about her.

"Hey, while we wait for them to move Luke to a regular hospital room, how about we go to the hospital cafeteria to buy some food? You haven't eaten anything this afternoon and you look really tired," he said, putting his arm around Evelyne's shoulder.

"What if they move Luke and I don't know?" she asked.

"We can ask the nurse later. You look pale, you need to rest and fill your stomach or you'll faint."

She nodded in agreement when she heard that reason. If she fainted, it would only make things worse. At least she knew Luke was okay. Now she had to take care of herself so she would have the strength to look after him.

They left the waiting room and headed for the hospital cafeteria. With Daniel's arm around her shoulder, she felt supported because her body was already quite weak. Daniel supported her so she could walk.

Pressing the elevator button, they waited for the elevator to open and take them down.

"Can you still walk?" he asked worriedly.

"Yes, don't worry. I can still walk a little with your help."

Ding!

The elevator doors opened, surprising them both to see two people inside the elevator that had stopped.

The blonde woman inside the elevator smiled at them.

"Evelyne, what a coincidence!"
