While the world was reeling from the news of the Burning Crown Pirates' audacious victories, on an unnamed, storm-wracked island in the New World, another former Warlord was running for his life.
"Kishishishi! Hurry, Absalom! They're still on our tail!" Gecko Moria wheezed, his large, ungainly body crashing through the dense jungle undergrowth.
"I'm going as fast as I can, Master Moria!" a disembodied voice panted beside him. Absalom, using his Suke Suke no Mi powers, was carrying his master, both of them invisible to the naked eye. They had barely escaped from Marineford, Doflamingo's mocking laughter echoing in their ears as he tried to carry out the World Government's secret order to eliminate Moria. They had been hiding ever since than, a ghost of a crew with no home and no power.
They burst into a clearing, thinking they were safe. They were wrong.
"Zehahaha! Found you."
Moria and Absalom froze. There, sitting on a large, dark-log, was Marshall (Davy) D. Teach. He wasn't alone. Shiryu of the Rain stood silently behind him, his hand on his sword. The rest of his surviving crew were spread out, cutting off any possibility of escape.
"Blackbeard!" Moria gasped, his face paling.
"Teach, to my friends," Blackbeard said, his grin wide and predatory. "And you, Gecko Moria, are about to become a very good friend of mine."
He stood up, his massive frame blotting out the sun. "I've suffered some... recent personnel changes," he said, a flash of cold fury in his eyes as he thought of Ace. "I find myself in need of a new power. An army, perhaps. And your ability to command the dead is very, very interesting to me. Join me, Moria. Together, we will rule this era!"
Moria stared. This upstart, this traitor who had gotten lucky, was offering him a position as a subordinate? The pride of a man who had once dared to challenge Kaido roared to life.
"Never!" Moria shrieked. "I am the great Gecko Moria! I serve no one!"
Blackbeard's grin didn't falter. "Wrong answer."
He didn't move. He simply raised a hand. "Kurouzu."
A vortex of pure darkness erupted from his palm. Absalom, who had been invisible, was suddenly revealed as the darkness sucked in the light, his body being pulled violently towards Blackbeard. "Master!" he screamed.
Shiryu moved, a blur of motion too fast to see. A single, clean slash. Absalom's head flew from his shoulders. His invisible body reappeared, crumpling to the ground.
"Absalom!" Moria screamed in pure, soul-shattering grief.
"The power of invisibility... Zehahaha! That will be very useful," Blackbeard mused, ignoring Moria's anguish. He looked at the grieving Warlord. "Now then. For your fruit."
He lunged forward. The fight was over before it began. Blackbeard's darkness nullified Moria's shadow powers, and a single, Haki-infused punch was all it took to bring the giant to his knees. Blackbeard placed a hand on Moria's head, and a vortex of unnatural, soul-stealing darkness enveloped them both. Moria let out a final, bloodcurdling scream that was abruptly cut short.
When the darkness receded, Moria was gone, and Blackbeard was laughing, a new, shadowy aura swirling around him.
"Darkness is the absence of light," he roared, a cloud of shadow forming in his open palm. "But with this power... I can create the shadows myself! I don't need the sun! I am the night! Zehahahaha!" He now had the power to create an army of the dead, an endless legion of soldiers to replace the ones Ace had killed.
A few weeks later, on his new headquarters of Fullalead, Blackbeard was admiring his new power when a subordinate ran in.
"Captain! A ship is approaching! It's... it's Edward Weevil!"
Blackbeard's grin returned. He had been a laughingstock for weeks, the pirate world mocking his humiliation at the hands of Ace. Now, opportunity had come knocking.
He met them at the port. The monstrous, simple-minded Edward Weevil stood silently, a massive bisento on his back, drool dripping from his chin. Beside him was the small, cunning figure of his mother, Miss Bakkin.
"Blackbeard-sama," Bakkin said, her voice a saccharine-sweet coo that didn't hide the greed in her eyes. "We heard you've had some trouble with my 'son's' treacherous little brother, Ace."
"Zehahaha! Just a minor setback," Teach boomed.
"Of course," she said with a sly smile. "But you've lost four of your strongest fighters. My son, the true heir of Whitebeard, is looking for his father's treasure. You are sitting on his father's land. I propose an alliance."
She laid out the terms. Weevil's monstrous, raw power in exchange for Blackbeard's help in hunting down the Burning Crown Pirates and claiming their "rightful" inheritance.
Blackbeard looked at the mindless giant, then back at the cunning old woman. He had just acquired the power to create an army. Now, he was being offered a living, breathing monster to be its commander. Ace had taken four of his commanders. The world had just handed him a perfect, ready-made replacement.
He let out a deep, booming laugh that shook the very foundations of the island.
"Zehahaha! This is fate! It's perfect!" he roared, his eyes gleaming with a new, terrifying light. He looked out at the sea, towards the distant islands where Ace was celebrating his victories. The game had changed. The puppet master had just been given a rabid dog, and a legion of the dead to back it up.
"Let the little lighter play his games," Blackbeard sneered, a new, horrifying confidence in his voice. "The real king is about to make his move."
