Chapter 4 - Orange Peels (Citrus Sinensis) as an Alternative for a Dish washing Liquid: It's Effectiveness by: Wendy Tarah S. Banguel

Dishwashing is a regular household activity to maintain hygiene and prevent food-borne illnesses. Dishwashing liquid, commonly found in supermarkets and convenience stores, is a common cleaning agent. Although the cost varies, it is essential for maintaining cleanliness. Homemade dishwashing liquid can save money on cleaning materials and is a cost-effective solution for maintaining cleanliness. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of homemade dishwashing liquid made from orange peels. The study also aims to identify the chemical compounds of orange peel and evaluate the concentration, gender on hands, and stain removal effectiveness. The study draws upon a quantitative, applied, and experimental research design in order to determine the effectiveness of the proposed product, which is to be given to the selected participants, who the members of 5 families, specifically within the streets of Bougainvilla in Barangay Pembo. With a total of 20 respondents, the data was gathered through a validated survey questionnaire and treated using statistical tools such as average, mean, and summation to determine the level of effectiveness of orange peels as a dishwashing liquid. The study is conducted in a four-month implementation period for data collection, tool distribution, and data analysis. Through data analysis and interpretation, the study therefore concludes that pectin, the most abundant component of orange peels, is the most effective ingredient in a dishwashing liquid. This is due to its moisture-retaining and skin-conditioning properties. The majority of respondents rated the dishwashing liquid's concentration as moderately acceptable, with most stating it was gentle on hands and comparable to a leading commercial product in grease removal. The study recommends further investigation into pectin's potential advantages in making dishwashing solutions gentler on skin while maintaining its potent grease-cutting capabilities. Further testing is recommended to understand specific preferences for orange peels as a dishwashing liquid.
