Chapter 2 - Papaya Seeds (Carica papaya L.) as an Environmentally Friendly Disinfectant Spray for Domestic Purposes: Its Potentiality by Ellaine G. Prendol of 12 - Biyo

Papaya seeds (Carica papaya L.) show potential as a natural disinfectant due to their antimicrobial properties. Chemical-based disinfectants often pose health risks, such as respiratory problems and skin irritation, while contributing to environmental pollution (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). This study investigates the effectiveness of papaya seed-based disinfectant spray as a safe and eco-friendly alternative for household applications. Research by Baskaran & Pandian (2012) highlights papaya seeds' ability to combat bacterial contamination, supporting their potential as natural disinfectants. TEM This study applied quantitative research and used random sampling to gather insights from Home Economics students at Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino High School. A.S. & M.M. (2020) demonstrated the antibacterial properties of papaya seeds, while Ibraham and Kamaraj (2014) validated their bioactive components in sustainable disinfectant development. These studies reinforce the possibility of using papaya seeds as a natural disinfectant, reducing reliance on synthetic products. The findings indicate that papaya seed extract effectively eliminates bacteria, making it a promising alternative to conventional disinfectants. Pundir, Jain and Sharma (2010) indentified that there are a lot of chemical components of papaya seeds that can be used for environmentally friendly disinfectant spray, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and Benzyl Isothiocyanate. Respondents evaluated that the papaya seed-based disinfectant spray is suitable for domestic applications. The antimicrobial activity, environmental friendliness, surface compatibility, and sensory experience garnered a rating of "Very High Potential," while safety was rated with a "High Potential," overall confirming its potentiality and reliability.
