Chapter 28 - Power

Marie closed her eyes tightly as Sybil swung her dagger downward. When she opened her eyes she only saw darkness.

Her head was spinning, and she couldn't tell what direction she was moving in. She felt like her spirit and body were being ripped into two different directions as she spiraled out of control. She squeezed her eyes tightly, trying to fight the uneasiness in her stomach.

Suddenly, everything stopped abruptly. Marie slowly opened her eyes and came face to face with Sargon. She looked up at him as her legs gave out from beneath her.

Sargon caught Marie before falling, lifting her and carrying her over to the bed. She was breathing heavily and shaking. All her color had left her skin. She tried to speak but Sargon wouldn't let her.

He went to the washroom and came back with a cool cloth, placing it on her forehead. She didn't realize she was sweating, and her body was warm until the cloth touched her skin.

Sargon reached for another cloth and placed a liquid on it, blotting Marie's face with it. The ointment burned, causing Marie to flinch.

Marie pulled Sargon by his shirt closely to stop him from doing whatever he was doing. She needed him to listen.

"Sybil! It's Sybil. She is doing this!" She said, in panic.

"Marie, you need to rest. I don't know what just happened but what I saw is something I never want to see again. We need to find another way to do this." Sargon said, reaching for Marie's hand and holding it against his lips.

Marie sat up in her bed.

"Listen to me. Sybil is going to kill us all if she is not stopped. She is powerful, more powerful than I thought."

"How do you know this?"

"Wait. Give me a piece of paper."

Sargon walked over to the desk and brought back a piece of paper for Marie.

"Ignesiro" She whispered.

She gazed at the piece of paper as nothing happened. Tears began to form in her eyes as she said the spell in her mind once more and focused.

Suddenly, the paper ignited.

"I still have my powers." She whispered through the tears she tried to hold back.

Sargon took the paper away from Marie so she wouldn't get burned. She dropped her face in her hands and wept as Sargon wrapped his arms around her.

When Marie lifted her face away from her hands, she saw blood on her fingers. She moved Sargon out of the way and jumped out of bed. She ran to the washroom and looked at herself the mirror.

Sybil's claw marks remained on her cheek. Marie felt numb. It was all real. Sybil was in control of it all. She wished her mother was there to tell her what to do.

Sargon walked behind Marie and turned her around, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"What did you see?" She asked as Sargon looked into her eyes.

He took her hand and walked her out of the washroom, back her bed and lifted her onto the mattress in a sitting position as he sat next to her. He took his hand in hers, holding it tightly. His eyes gazed at the floor.

"I walked in, and you were on the floor. I didn't want to interrupt, but the guard said you instructed him to let me in. When I saw you, your body was shaking, and it looked like you were fighting to move. Your eyes shot open, and they were white. At the same time the three scratch marks that are on your face now, appeared. I called your name and moved closer to you to see if what I was seeing was real. I heard you scream like you were being harmed so I pulled you out of your star." Sargon said.

Marie could hear the pain in his voice. She reached for his face and made him look at her.

"Sargon, you saved my life." She said, holding back tears as she threw her arms around him and climbed onto his lap, straddling him and squeezing him tightly.

Sargon held onto her, pulling her closer. "I can't lose you." He whispered.

"You won't." She replied.

Sargon and Marie held each other for a long while. She wondered if this man was part of her destiny. This man had been saving her in so many ways.

Marie created a little bit of space between them and touched her forehead with his.

"Did you get the items on the list?" Marie asked as she wiped away her tears.

"You are not doing this anymore. I can't let you hurt yourself to help us. There must be another way."

"Sargon, there is no other way. Sybil needs me. She needs my powers. She is not strong enough to defeat the entire werewolf population, but with my power she will be. I have to stop her."

"She almost killed you, Marie!" Sargon said firmly.

"Yes, and you saved me!" Marie shot back.

"What if I wasn't here to save you?" He asked.

Marie wrapped her arms around him and dug her face into his neck, giving him a kiss.

"Sargon, I am a witch. Not only am I a witch, but I am the chosen. There is no one I expect to understand me like you should. As much as I try to live a normal life, it will be impossible. It is in my nature to desire to save the world. If I am not saving your friends, it will be others. This is not the first time I have had to do something like what I have done for Harold. How do you think Dr. Brinks knew how to find me?"

Sargon knew she was speaking the truth. He was a wolf who had fallen for a witch. He would have to let her do what she felt she needed to.

"What do we need to do?" He asked, feeling completely conquered.

Marie smiled and gave him a soft kiss on his lips.

"If you have retrieved all of the things on the list then that is all that needs to be done before I work on Vianna. I need to rest a bit to regain my strength. Do you have an hour or two?"

"What else do you need?"

"I need you to rest with me." She said with a smile.

Marie pushed Sargon down on the bed, climbed over him, and adjusted to her side as she pulled his arm around her waist. Sargon pulled her closely, causing her breath to hitch.

"I have one request." Sargon whispered as his lips brushed against her ear.

"What would that be?"

"Can we sleep in my room?"

Marie smiled at the request. She forgot she had an entire ritual spread out in her room. Anyone who isn't a witch would be uncomfortable.

"Ok. Let's go."

They made their way to Sargon's room and got into bed. After they settled, it wasn't long before Marie fell asleep in Sargon's arms.
