Chapter 22 - Chapter -22: The Ones Who Stay

They ended up at their usual spot---

the low wall behind the sports ground where teachers rarely looked and conversations stayed real.

Christopher sat first.

Leo dropped beside him.

Ethan followed, tossing his bag down.

"You look like someone who just survived a storm," Ethan said."did we miss the lightning?"

Before Christopher could answer, Evan leaned against the wall, arms folded, eyes sharp.

"No ," Evan said calmly. "The storm's still there.people are just pretending it's weather.

Christopher glanced at him ."You've been quiet. "

Evan shrugged. "I've been watching. "

Leo snorted. "That's his way of saying he knows more than he's saying. "

Evan didn't deny it.

"Jason's losing grip," Evan continued. "Sofee's trying to compensate. Rumors don't start by accident---they're coordinated."

Ethan whistled softly ."That bad,huh ?"

"That obvious, "Evan replied.

Christopher exhaled, tension easing just a little. "I didn't want you guys dragged into this."

Leo turned to him ,expression firm.

"Too late.you're our problem. "

Ethan grinned. "In a friendly, lifelong way."

Evan finally smiled---just a corner of his mouth. "You stood up today,"he said to Christopher. "Publicly. That chances the math."

Christopher looked down."I wasn't trying to be brave. "

"You were trying to be honest, "Evan said."that's rarer."

Silence settled---comfortable,grounding.

Across the field, Zia walked past with her friends.

She didn't stop.

She didn't have to.

Christopher watched her go ,then looked back at his friends.

"I don't know where this ends," he admitted.

Leo bumped his shoulder. " wherever it is ,we're there."

Ethan nodded. "No disappearing acts."

Evan pushed off the wall."And no letting other people define the story. "

Christopher felt it then ---clear, steady.

He wasn't standing alone in the middle anymore.

He had people who stayed.

And that made all the difference.
