Chapter 26 - Chapter-26: After the silence

Christopher didn't read the note again.

He already knew the words by heart.

Still ours.

The hallway felt louder than usual.

Laughter, lockers, footsteps--everything moved like normal.

He didn't.

Leo noticed first.

"You're quiet, " Leo said, walking beside him."like ...more than your usual quiet. "

"I'm fine ," Christopher replied.

Leo tilted his head."That's not an answer. "

Christopher stopped near the stairs. "Sometimes things happen that don't need talking. "

Leo held his gaze a second longer than necessary.

Then nodded. "Yeah .I get that ."

Evan appeared from nowhere, slinging his bag over one shoulder.

"Why do I feel like I walked into a therapy session?"

Leo smirked. "Because you always do."

Christopher smiled faintly. His friends were here.

Still normal.

Still safe.

Across the courtyard, Zia stood with Jason.

Jason was talking.

Laughing.

Zia smiled --but it didn't reach her eyes.

Jason leaned in slightly.

She stepped back without realizing.

Christopher looked away before Leo could follow his gaze.

Sofee wasn't blind.

She saw the way Christopher avoided the courtyard.

The way Zia suddenly stopped laughing loudly.

The way silence passed between them that didn't feel empty---felt chosen.

During lunch,Sofee slid into the seat across from Zia.

"You okay ?" She asked sweetly.

Zia nodded. "Yeah.just tired."

"Tired of what ?" Sofee pressed.

Zia met her eyes .calm .careful.

"Of noise. "

Sofee smiled--but something flickered underneath. Suspicion.

That evening, Christopher sat on his bed ,staring at the ceiling.

His stepmother's voice echoed faintly from downstairs---complaining about grades ,responsibility, attitude.

He didn't respond.

For once, his father didn't intervene either.

Christopher reached into his pocket.

The folded note.

He didn't open it.

He just held it .

For the first time ,he didn't feel confused about what he felt.

Only about what it would cost.

Meanwhile, Zia stood at her window, phone in hand.

No messages. No calls.

She wasn't waiting.

She was choosing.

She folded a fresh piece of paper, slid in into her diary ,and whispered to herself---

"Slow .Quiet.Ours."

Some stories didn't rush forward.

They moved sideways.

Hidden.

Growing roots where No one thought to look.
