Chapter 8 - The Garden Talks

The afternoon sun filtered gently through the hospital's small garden, painting streaks of gold over the benches and the few flowering plants that lined the path. A faint breeze stirred the air, carrying with it the scent of damp grass and disinfectant from the nearby corridor.

Ralt and Princess walked slowly along the path, paper cups of juice in hand. They had decided to take a little break after lunch—partly to stretch their legs, and partly to escape the endless teasing of Eli and Elena.

Princess was the first to speak, her tone teasing but still shy. "You know, Lolo hasn't stopped smiling since breakfast. I think he really believes what he said."

Ralt chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, same with my mom. She even looked proud, like she just arranged some royal engagement."

Princess laughed softly. "Room Sapphire matchmaking service."

"Exactly," Ralt grinned. "They should put that on the hospital brochure."

Their laughter faded into a comfortable silence as they sat down on one of the benches. The late afternoon light made everything look softer, more peaceful. For a moment, both simply watched a few sparrows hopping near the fountain.

Then Ralt spoke again, quieter this time. "But… kidding aside," he said, turning to her, "your grandfather wasn't wrong about one thing."

Princess glanced at him curiously. "Which one?"

He looked at her, his eyes gentle but sincere. "That you'd be a great nurse. You've got the heart for it. I can see it—the patience, the care. The way you treat people, even strangers like my mom… it's rare."

Princess's lips curved into a soft smile. "Thank you," she said quietly. "That means a lot, especially coming from you."

Ralt smiled back, but there was something thoughtful in his gaze. "And I think," he added, almost in a whisper, "you'll make a good wife someday too."

Princess blinked, caught off guard. "W–what?"

Ralt chuckled softly, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Hey, I didn't mean to startle you. I just mean—you're kind, responsible, strong-hearted. The kind of person who makes everyone around her better. Whoever wins your heart someday… he's going to be one lucky guy."

Princess looked away, her cheeks warming under the late sun. For a moment she didn't know what to say. The words lingered in the air—gentle, sincere, and unexpectedly intimate.

"You say that so easily," she murmured finally, her voice small.

Ralt smiled faintly. "Maybe because it's true."

Princess glanced at him again, her eyes soft but searching. "And you?" she asked quietly. "Have you ever found someone like that?"

He hesitated, looking toward the distant fountain. "Maybe once," he said. "But life has its ways of changing paths. I focused on work, on taking care of my mom. I guess I never thought much about… finding someone again."

Princess nodded slowly, understanding in her eyes. "Sometimes timing decides for us."

"Yeah," he said softly, "but sometimes… people meet again when the timing's finally right."

Their eyes met then—just for a moment—but something in that look was different now. Not just friendliness, not just gratitude, but something deeper, something quietly unfolding.

Princess smiled, breaking the silence with a light laugh. "You know, you sound a lot like my Lolo when you talk like that."

Ralt laughed too, rubbing the back of his neck. "Then I'm in good company."

They both looked up at the sky, streaked now with orange and lavender as the sun began to set.

For a while, they didn't speak. The quiet between them was peaceful, filled with unspoken thoughts—both of them knowing that the hours they had left in Room Sapphire were numbered.

But right there, in that little garden outside the hospital, something gentle had bloomed—something real, something honest.

And though neither dared to name it yet, both knew it was something worth remembering.

The Evening Before Goodbye)

Night had fallen softly over the hospital.

The corridors were calm, the hum of fluorescent lights blending with the faint rhythm of heart monitors. Dinner trays had been cleared, and the usual chatter of visitors had faded away, leaving only the peaceful silence of rest.

Inside Room Sapphire, Eli and Elena sat side by side, their beds pulled a little closer as they watched Ralt and Princess quietly arranging things for tomorrow's discharge. Ralt folded a few of his mother's clothes while Princess labeled her grandfather's medicines, her neat handwriting precise and careful.

Eli smiled faintly, his eyes following the two. "Look at them," he whispered, his voice touched with warmth. "They move like they've known each other forever."

Elena chuckled softly. "Maybe hearts recognize what the mind can't explain."

Eli turned to her with a grin. "You and your poetic lines again. Still the same woman who made me memorize verses during our school play."

Elena laughed quietly, shaking her head. "And you still remember them?"

"Every word," he said, his tone soft but sure. "I remember the lines… and the girl who made me believe in them."

For a moment, silence wrapped around them, tender and unspoken. The beeping monitors seemed to slow, the night stretching gently between two souls who shared a thousand memories and one fragile present.

Then Eli's tone shifted, more thoughtful. "You know, Elena… watching those two, I realize something."

"What's that?" she asked, looking at him.

He smiled, eyes glinting with a quiet wisdom. "Life always gives second chances. Not always in the same form, not always with the same person… but it finds a way to let love return—through laughter, through kindness, even through two young people who just met in a hospital."

Elena followed his gaze to where Ralt and Princess were sitting now, side by side on the visitor's couch, whispering something and smiling shyly. She felt her chest warm at the sight.

"You think they'll see what we all see?" she asked.

Eli chuckled softly. "Eventually. Love has its own timing. No need to rush it. Maybe tomorrow, maybe years from now—but what matters is, they made each other smile when this room needed it most."

Elena nodded slowly. "You're right… Room Sapphire won't feel the same when we leave."

Eli leaned back against his pillow. "Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it means this place gave us more than just healing—it gave us hope again."

Elena's eyes softened as she looked at him. "Eli…" she said gently, her tone trembling with something deeper. "I'm glad we met again here. Maybe the world wanted us to finish a story we left hanging."

Eli smiled at her, his voice barely above a whisper. "Maybe so… or maybe it just wanted to remind me that I never really stopped caring."

The words lingered in the quiet room.

Elena looked down, blinking away the tears threatening to fall. "You always knew what to say," she murmured.

"And you," Eli said, smiling faintly, "always knew how to make it mean something."

Across the room, Ralt and Princess had noticed the tender quiet between them. Princess smiled softly, whispering, "They look so peaceful, don't they?"

Ralt nodded, his tone gentle. "Yeah… like two hearts finally at rest."

The nurse peeked in then, reminding everyone it was lights out soon.

Eli and Elena exchanged one last glance before lying back down, their hands brushing briefly between their beds.

Ralt and Princess dimmed the lights, the soft glow from the corridor spilling across the floor.

As the night deepened, the four of them drifted into sleep—two hearts remembering, two hearts beginning.

Outside, the moonlight touched the hospital walls, as if blessing the room one last time.

Tomorrow, they would all go their separate ways.

But tonight…

Tonight, Room Sapphire was full of love.
