Chapter 14 - A Visit To The Heart

The SUV slowed to a stop in front of Eli's modest house, its white paint glistening faintly under the morning sun. The small garden outside was dotted with raindrops still clinging to the petals of hibiscus and santan flowers.

Ralt turned off the engine and looked at his mother. "We're here."

Elena smiled, fixing the folds of her blouse. "It's been years since I last came here," she said softly. "The place hasn't changed much."

They stepped out, carrying the fruit basket and the bag of cookies. Ralt walked ahead and knocked gently on the door. It took only a moment before it swung open.

Eli appeared, wearing a light sweater and that same gentle smile that Elena had missed all these years.

"Elena," he said, surprised but visibly happy. "You're here."

Elena laughed softly. "You think I'd let Ralt come without me? Not a chance."

Eli chuckled. "Still the same as ever. Please, come in."

Inside, the house was neat and homey - the faint scent of eucalyptus oil lingered in the air. A vase of fresh flowers sat on the table, and in the corner, a family picture of Eli and Princess smiled back at them.

Elena handed the cookies to Eli. "These are for you and Princess. Freshly baked."

"Ah, Elena, you still remember my weakness," Eli said warmly, taking them.

Ralt followed behind, holding the fruit basket. "Good morning, sir."

Eli turned to him. "You don't have to be so formal, Ralt. Just call me Lolo Eli like Princess does."

Ralt smiled. "Alright... Lolo Eli."

They shared a laugh that filled the room, light and familiar.

"Princess is still resting," Eli said, gesturing toward the small bedroom down the hall. "She had a fever last night, but she's sleeping better now."

Elena's eyes softened. "Poor girl. Can I see her?"

"Of course," Eli replied.

They walked quietly toward the room. The door was slightly ajar, and through it, they could see Princess lying on her bed, her face pale but peaceful. Her long hair was slightly messy, and a cool towel rested on her forehead.

Ralt's chest tightened a little at the sight. He'd always seen her bright and lively - seeing her this fragile made something ache inside him.

Eli stepped closer and whispered, "She'll be happy to know you came."

As if on cue, Princess stirred, her eyes fluttering open. When she saw them, a faint smile curved her lips. "Tito Eli... Tita Elena... and... Ralt?"

Her voice was soft, weak but full of surprise.

"Hey, sleepyhead," Ralt said gently, setting the fruit basket on the side table. "We brought you something to help you feel better."

Princess tried to sit up, but Elena quickly moved closer. "No, no, dear. Stay still. You need rest." She brushed a stray strand of hair from Princess's forehead like a caring mother. "You've been brave. Eli told us you went to school even when it rained."

Princess smiled faintly. "I didn't want to miss my exam."

Ralt shook his head. "You could've told me to pick you up earlier."

"I didn't want to bother you," Princess murmured.

Eli, standing beside Elena, couldn't help but smile knowingly. He leaned close to her ear and whispered, "See? I told you, they're a perfect match."

Elena chuckled softly, her eyes never leaving the two young people. "You might be right, Eli. Look at them - they even argue gently."

Eli smirked. "Ah, reminds me of someone," he said, glancing at her.

"Don't start," Elena replied, trying not to laugh.

Ralt helped adjust Princess's pillow and handed her a bottle of milk he'd bought last night. "Drink this. It'll help your throat."

Princess took it, her fingers brushing against his for just a moment. The contact was small - fleeting - but both of them felt it linger longer than it should.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Ralt nodded, smiling softly. "That's what friends are for."

"Friends?" Eli echoed teasingly from behind, his tone light.

Ralt turned, embarrassed. "I mean-"

Elena laughed, placing a hand on Eli's arm. "Oh, don't tease the boy. He's doing a good thing."

But when she turned back to see Ralt looking at Princess - and the way Princess shyly turned her gaze away - Elena's heart melted a little.

She whispered quietly, almost to herself, "Ah... destiny, you're doing your work again."

After a while, Princess started feeling sleepy again. Elena helped Eli prepare a warm soup in the kitchen, while Ralt stayed by the living room, flipping through an old photo album Eli had left on the table.

He smiled when he saw pictures of Princess as a child - in her school uniform, holding medals, smiling brightly beside Eli.

Eli joined him after a moment. "She's been my sunshine for years," he said, sitting beside Ralt. "When my daughter passed, she became my reason to keep smiling. You know, Elena and I used to dream of growing old surrounded by laughter - I guess in some strange way, that dream is starting to return."

Ralt looked at him with quiet respect. "She's lucky to have you, sir."

Eli chuckled softly. "And maybe she'll be lucky in other ways too - who knows?"

Ralt laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck. "We'll see, Lolo Eli. We'll see."

When Elena and Eli returned with the soup, the four of them shared lunch together - light, full of laughter and gentle teasing.

At one point, Elena told a story from their hospital days - the laughter, the nightly songs, and the shared hope that they would get better together.

Eli smiled at her, eyes soft and full of gratitude. "You know, Elena... when we were there, I thought maybe fate just wanted us to remember that some bonds never fade. Even after years apart."

Elena met his gaze and replied, "Some bonds don't fade, Eli. They just wait - for the right time to shine again."

There was a quiet stillness after that. Ralt and Princess looked at them, sensing something unspoken yet deeply beautiful between the two.

The rain had brought them all together once - in Room Sapphire - and now, under clearer skies, it seemed to be weaving their stories once more.

Ralt glanced at Princess, her eyes brighter now, her cheeks slowly regaining color.

"Feeling better?" he asked softly.

Princess nodded. "Much better. Maybe the rain isn't so bad after all."

Ralt smiled. "Maybe not - if it leads to moments like this."

Eli and Elena exchanged knowing glances and shared a quiet laugh.

Indeed, the rain had passed - but the warmth it left behind was just beginning to bloom.

The afternoon sun stretched lazily across the sky, filtering through the mango tree beside Eli's house. A soft breeze carried the scent of wet earth and flowers, still fresh after last night's rain.

Ralt and Princess were inside, watching an old movie on the small television, their laughter occasionally spilling out into the hallway. The sound of their voices blended naturally - like two notes in harmony neither of them realized they were creating.

Meanwhile, on the porch, Eli and Elena sat side by side on the wooden bench. Between them, two cups of warm salabat steamed gently, filling the quiet air with a comforting aroma of ginger.

For a long moment, they didn't speak - just listened to the birds, the rustle of leaves, and the faint laughter coming from inside.

Eli broke the silence first. "It's strange, isn't it?" he said softly. "Seeing them there, talking and laughing like that. Feels like watching our younger selves."

Elena smiled, her eyes glinting with gentle nostalgia. "Maybe life is giving us a mirror - showing us what could've been."

Eli chuckled quietly. "You were always better at reading meaning into things."

"No," she replied, sipping her tea. "I just learned to appreciate how life circles back in the most unexpected ways. Look at us - after all these years, fate had to send us both to that small hospital room named Sapphire."

He nodded, eyes gazing into the distance. "Room Sapphire... who would've thought that place would give me something to smile about again?"

Elena glanced at him. "You mean... Princess and Ralt?"

Eli shook his head with a soft grin. "Them too. But mostly you, Elena. I thought I'd forgotten how it felt to have an old friend sit beside me, scold me, laugh with me... and remind me I'm still alive."

Elena felt her heart warm, though she tried to hide it behind a playful tone. "Oh, Eli, you were never good at hiding your feelings. You still blush when you say things like that."

Eli laughed, that deep hearty laugh that once made her smile so easily in their younger days. "You still remember, huh?"

"How could I forget?" she said, leaning back against the bench. "You used to get so nervous at the school dances. But when our song played, you danced like you'd been practicing for weeks."

Eli smiled faintly, humming a few lines of that same old tune - their prom song.

"When the night has come... and the land is dark..."

Elena joined in, softly.

"...and the moon is the only light we'll see."

Their voices blended, fragile but full of memories.

When the last note faded, they sat quietly again. The wind brushed lightly through Elena's hair, and Eli reached out, hesitating for a moment before gently tucking a strand behind her ear - the way he used to.

She looked at him, startled but not pulling away. "You haven't changed," she whispered.

Eli's voice trembled slightly. "Maybe I have... but some parts of me stayed right where I left them - with you."

Her eyes glistened, though she quickly turned away, pretending to watch the trees. "You always knew how to make a woman cry, Eli."

He chuckled softly, looking at her with fondness. "And you always knew how to make me laugh again."

A comfortable silence followed - one that didn't need words. It was as though the years melted away, leaving only two souls who once shared a dance, a promise, and an unspoken love that time never erased.

From inside, they heard Princess laughing at something Ralt said, her voice bright and melodic.

Eli smiled. "You know... I see something in those two. The way she looks at him - shy, unsure, but with that quiet spark. It reminds me of you."

Elena turned her gaze to the window, where Princess was handing Ralt a glass of juice. He smiled back, the same warm way Eli once did. "Maybe they'll find what we didn't," she said softly.

"Maybe," Eli agreed. "Or maybe... they're meant to finish our unfinished story."

Elena looked at him, eyes shimmering. "You think so?"

Eli nodded slowly. "Love doesn't die, Elena. It just waits - sometimes for a lifetime, sometimes for another pair of hearts to carry it forward."

Her lips curved into a wistful smile. "Then I hope Ralt and Princess carry it well."

"They will," Eli said confidently. "Your son has your kindness - and my granddaughter, her grandmother's courage."

Elena laughed gently. "Then they'll do just fine."

For a moment, the world felt still - like the universe itself was holding its breath, watching two souls finally at peace.

Eli leaned back, letting the soft wind brush his face. "You know, Elena," he said with a tender smile, "if fate gave me another lifetime, I'd still dance with you - in whatever room it leads us to."

Elena looked at him, tears glistening but her smile radiant. "Then I'll make sure to save you the last dance."

From inside, Ralt's laughter mixed with Princess's gentle giggle - young love beginning to bloom as old love quietly found its peace again.

The porch fell into silence once more, but it was the kind of silence that felt like music - a harmony of past and present, of what was and what could still be.

And above them, the sunlight shimmered gently through the clouds, as if the heavens themselves were smiling upon the promise that began long ago - in Room Sapphire.
