Chapter 7 - Morning Hints

The faint glow of dawn began to seep through the curtains of Room Sapphire, painting the walls with a soft, golden hue. Outside, the corridors were slowly coming to life-the squeak of rubber soles, the clink of medicine trays, and the low hum of nurses greeting the new day.

A roaming nurse gently knocked on the door.

"Good morning po, vital signs check," she said softly as she entered, careful not to disturb the still-sleeping Ralt on the visitor's chair.

Elena stirred first, blinking against the dim light. Eli opened his eyes next, groggy but awake. Princess, ever alert even on little sleep, stood up and smiled politely at the nurse.

"I'll help," she said quietly, taking the thermometer and BP cuff from the nurse's tray.

She moved gracefully, checking her grandfather's pulse, then Elena's temperature, speaking in a low, reassuring voice. There was calm in her hands, care in her every gesture. Even the nurse smiled at how naturally Princess worked, as if she already belonged among them.

Eli watched her fondly. "You see that, Elena?" he said, his voice still husky from sleep. "That's my granddaughter-so focused she forgets she's still a student."

Elena chuckled softly. "She's wonderful, Eli. So caring. She reminds me of how you used to be with everyone back in the day."

Eli laughed quietly. "Don't tease me too early in the morning."

But then, as Princess gently adjusted Elena's pillow, Elena's gaze softened. She looked toward her son, still asleep in the chair, his head tilted to the side, breathing steady.

Then she turned back to Eli and said, almost in a whisper, "You know, Eli... I think your granddaughter would be a best fit for my son."

Eli blinked in surprise, then followed her gaze. Ralt looked peaceful-calm in a way Elena hadn't seen in years. For a man who carried so many responsibilities, this was the first time he looked truly at rest.

Eli smiled knowingly. "I totally agree."

Elena laughed softly, half embarrassed but touched by her own words. "I don't know... they just seem to understand each other. Even without saying much."

Eli nodded slowly. "Sometimes the heart recognizes what the mind hasn't named yet."

They both smiled, sharing a silent agreement born of wisdom and age.

Princess returned just then, placing the BP log sheet back on the tray. "All done," she said cheerfully, unaware of the tender conversation that had just passed between their elders.

"Thank you, hija," Elena said warmly. "You're really good at this."

Princess blushed slightly. "It's nothing po. Just practice."

Eli grinned. "If this is just practice, then the hospital's lucky to have you."

Princess laughed lightly, her eyes bright. "You always say that, Lolo."

As she turned to fix her grandfather's blanket, Elena and Eli exchanged a knowing glance-one that spoke volumes.

Outside, the sun had begun to rise fully, casting soft beams through the hospital window. The light touched each of them-Eli, Elena, Princess, and even Ralt, still asleep-binding them all in that quiet, golden moment.

In the gentle hum of the morning, love was being nurtured, not through grand confessions or dramatic gestures, but through care, laughter, and the unspoken hopes of two hearts-and two elders who could already see what was slowly blooming.

Morning Teasing Over Breakfast)

The scent of warm rice and fried fish drifted through the ward as the morning meal cart rolled in. The nurse on duty smiled politely as she placed the trays on the bedside tables.

"Good morning po," she greeted cheerfully. "Breakfast time."

Eli was already sitting upright, his energy surprisingly bright for someone recently confined. Elena was smiling, too-her face livelier than it had been in days.

Princess helped arrange the trays, handing utensils to her grandfather, while Ralt stirred awake from the chair, rubbing his eyes. His back ached slightly from sleeping sitting up, but when he saw his mother smiling, he couldn't complain.

"Good morning, Ma," he said softly, stretching his arms.

"Good morning, son," Elena replied warmly. "You finally got some sleep."

Eli grinned from his bed. "Good morning, young man. Your snoring kept the ward alive last night."

Ralt laughed, embarrassed. "Sorry about that, sir."

Princess chuckled quietly behind her hand. "You really did snore, though," she teased.

Ralt raised an eyebrow, pretending to be offended. "Oh, so now you're joining the team?"

She grinned. "Just telling the truth."

Their laughter filled the room again-light, familiar, and comforting. Even the nurse smiled before excusing herself to continue her rounds.

As they began eating, Elena and Eli exchanged a secret look-one filled with the same knowing amusement they shared earlier that dawn.

Eli took a spoonful of rice and said casually, "You know, Ralt..."

Ralt looked up. "Yes, sir?"

Eli smiled mischievously. "Your mother and I had a little talk this morning."

Ralt froze mid-bite. "Oh? About what?"

Princess glanced between them curiously. "What did you talk about, Lolo?"

Eli leaned back in his bed, feigning innocence. "Oh, nothing too serious. Just... the possibility of a perfect match."

Elena, trying not to laugh, added, "Yes, we might've found one right here in Room Sapphire."

Ralt blinked. "A match?" He glanced at his mom, suspicious. "What are you talking about?"

Elena smiled sweetly. "Oh, just something we both noticed. How two young people seem to enjoy each other's company lately."

It took a moment for the meaning to register. When it did, Princess's cheeks turned pink, and Ralt coughed into his cup of coffee.

"Ma..." Ralt said in disbelief, trying to hide his grin. "You and Sir Eli are teaming up now?"

Eli laughed heartily. "We're just old folks enjoying a bit of conversation, that's all. Don't mind us."

Princess covered her face with her hands, laughing nervously. "Lolo, please..."

Elena chuckled softly, her eyes dancing. "Don't be shy, Princess. You make my son smile. I haven't seen him like that in years."

Ralt shook his head, half amused, half embarrassed. "I think I preferred it when you two were talking about blood sugar and diet, Ma."

Eli grinned wider. "Oh, but this topic is much sweeter."

That made everyone laugh, even Princess-her laughter bright and honest, breaking through the shy awkwardness.

As the laughter faded, there was a moment of warmth that lingered. Ralt looked at Princess and found her smiling back at him. For a brief second, the teasing faded into something softer-mutual understanding, quiet connection.

Elena watched them with gentle fondness. "You know," she said softly, looking at Eli, "maybe Room Sapphire really brought more healing than we expected."

Eli nodded, his voice calm but full of meaning. "It surely did."

The rest of breakfast went on with small talks-about food, about nurses, about what they would do once discharged-but beneath those simple words, something had changed. The laughter wasn't just laughter anymore. The glances weren't just glances.

And though neither Ralt nor Princess said it aloud, both knew that the thought of parting soon suddenly felt heavier than before.
