"Anderson, are you ready?" Alice asks me again.
"Yes." I look one more time at the door Elara just walked through, angry and upset with me, and it feels like something is stabbing me inside. I probably ruined everything with what I said to her. I rub a finger across the bridge of my nose. Miss Gates? If I had not agreed to take Alice to her appointment, I would have said yes to Elara. I try not to feel bad about it. She can ask that Jackson guy to drive her home. If he can kiss her, he can take her home, too. "I would prefer it if you called me Anderson. Just Anderson."
"And you will call me Alice?" she asks.
Her eyes say more than her words do. It is clear she likes me. I grab my water bottle and my briefcase. "Yes, Alice. Can we go now?"
"Of course, Anderson."
