Chapter 26 - The Cost of Survival

The fracture realm was dying.

White beams from Protocol Omega tore through the sky like spears from another universe. Wherever they touched, reality folded inward and disappeared completely.

Not shattered.

Not broken.

Erased.

Entire sections of the fractured plain collapsed into nothingness.

The void screamed.

Rook sprinted across the shifting ground, barely staying ahead of a collapsing zone that devoured everything behind him.

"Simon!" he shouted. "We are officially out of time!"

Ghost stood where he was, one hand raised toward the sky.

The Omega beam still bent slightly around him.

But only slightly.

Sweat ran down his face.

The weapon was stronger than anything the fracture had produced.

And it was getting worse.

Above them, three more beams punched through the sky.

Each one larger than the last.

Rook skidded to a stop beside him.

"You can't hold that!"

Ghost's voice was tight.

"I'm not trying to."

Rook blinked.

"…then what are you doing?"

Ghost looked at the beam carefully.

"Learning."

The Real Threat

The Archons had stopped attacking.

For the first time since their arrival, the hunters looked uncertain.

Even they didn't understand this weapon.

One of them stepped toward the Omega beam.

The moment its arm touched the edge—

It vanished.

Completely.

Not cut.

Not burned.

Gone.

The Archon pulled its arm back instantly.

But half of it was already erased.

Rook let out a low whistle.

"Okay… yeah. That's bad."

The injured Archon retreated.

The others repositioned defensively.

Ghost studied the reaction.

"Even they're scared of it."

Rook folded his arms.

"Well yeah."

He pointed upward.

"That thing deletes dimensions."

Another Omega beam struck the fracture realm.

The shockwave threw both of them backward.

Rook slammed into the ground and groaned.

Ghost rolled and forced himself upright again.

But now the cracks in the sky were shrinking.

Collapsing.

The fracture realm itself was being erased.

Rook realized it at the same time.

"Oh hell…"

Ghost looked around.

"If this place collapses…"

Rook finished the thought.

"…every fracture connected to it collapses too."

Ghost's expression hardened.

Earth.

Every fracture gate.

Every anomaly.

Everything tied to him.

Gone.

But not peacefully.

The destruction would spread through reality like a chain reaction.

Cities.

Continents.

Worlds.

Dominion hadn't built a weapon.

They had built a cosmic suicide switch.

Back on Earth

Commander Vasquez stood in the Dominion command bunker.

The Omega weapon had fired six times already.

The global fracture map was changing rapidly.

Some fractures were disappearing.

But others—

Were multiplying.

A technician shouted from across the room.

"Commander! The variable signal is reacting!"

Ghost's signal on the map pulsed violently.

Expanding.

Adapting.

Resisting.

Vasquez whispered quietly.

"Of course he is."

Another officer looked nervous.

"Should we continue Omega fire?"

Vasquez stared at the screen.

The simulation projections had been clear.

If the weapon didn't erase the anchor…

The fracture war would never end.

But if they kept firing…

The destruction might spiral beyond control.

She closed her eyes for a moment.

Then gave the order.

"Continue the strikes."

The technician hesitated.

"Yes, Commander."

Another Omega beam fired.

The Choice

Back in the fracture realm, the seventh beam struck.

Reality exploded outward.

A massive portion of the void collapsed completely.

Ghost and Rook barely jumped across the gap before the ground vanished behind them.

Rook landed hard and grabbed Ghost's arm.

"You feel that?!"

Ghost nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

The fracture energy inside him was reacting violently.

Not fighting the weapon.

Synchronizing with it.

Rook noticed the glow spreading through Ghost's veins.

"…Simon?"

Ghost looked down at his hands.

The red fracture energy was mixing with something else.

White.

Cold.

Omega energy.

"That weapon…"

Ghost whispered.

"…is built on the same principles as the fracture."

Rook stared.

"You're kidding."

Ghost shook his head.

"Dominion didn't invent it."

He looked up toward the collapsing sky.

"They copied it."

Another Omega beam tore through the void.

This time Ghost didn't move.

Instead—

He reached toward it.

Rook panicked instantly.

"Simon!"

The beam struck.

Reality screamed.

But the beam didn't erase him.

It split.

Flowing around him like water hitting stone.

Ghost's eyes widened.

"…I can control it."

Rook blinked.

"YOU CAN CONTROL THE DOOM LASER?"

Ghost ignored the comment.

He raised his other hand slowly.

The fracture sky responded.

Every crack above them began shifting.

Rearranging.

Aligning.

Rook stared upward.

"Oh… oh this is new."

The next Omega beam fired.

But this time—

Ghost caught it.

The beam stopped in midair.

Frozen between his hands like a spear of white lightning.

Ghost's breathing grew heavier.

The energy was enormous.

But the fracture was listening.

Adapting.

Responding.

Rook whispered in awe.

"Simon…"

Ghost looked toward the distant Archons.

"…I think Dominion just gave me a weapon."

The hunters stepped back.

Even they recognized the danger now.

Ghost raised the frozen Omega beam.

The fracture realm trembled.

For the first time since the war began—

The anchor had become the storm.

And somewhere far away, in a bunker beneath the ocean…

Commander Vasquez watched the Omega signal suddenly stop moving.

Her eyes widened.

"…what did he just do?"

Because the weapon designed to erase the fracture…

Had just been taken by it.
