Chapter 28 - The Ones Who Watch

The Watcher did not move.

It did not need to.

Its presence alone bent the fracture realm around it. The broken sky warped into impossible angles, and the floating shards of reality slowly rotated like planets caught in its gravity.

Ghost felt the pressure immediately.

It wasn't physical.

It was existential.

Standing before this thing felt like standing inside the gaze of the universe itself.

Rook leaned closer to him and whispered under his breath.

"Simon… if this thing asks us a question…"

Ghost didn't look away from the entity.

"…don't answer?"

Rook nodded slightly.

"Exactly."

The Watcher's countless glowing eyes shifted.

All of them focused on Ghost.

ANCHOR.

The single word echoed across the fracture realm.

Ghost remained still.

"Watcher."

The entity pulsed faintly.

Not approval.

Not anger.

Something closer to curiosity.

YOU HAVE EXCEEDED ALL PREDICTED VARIABLES.

Ghost shrugged.

"Happens."

Behind him, Rook whispered quietly.

"Stop antagonizing the cosmic librarian."

The Watcher ignored him completely.

Its attention never left Ghost.

YOU WERE NOT MEANT TO SURVIVE EXPOSURE.

Ghost's voice hardened slightly.

"Tell that to Dominion."

The entity responded instantly.

THE HUMANS DID NOT CREATE THE FRACTURE.

Rook muttered.

"Yeah, we figured."

Ghost's eyes narrowed.

"Then who did?"

For a moment, the fracture realm fell completely silent.

Then the Watcher answered.

WE DID.

The Truth Behind the Fracture

The sky changed.

The cracks above them widened into enormous windows of light.

Inside them, images appeared.

Memories.

Not Ghost's memories.

Older ones.

Worlds forming.

Stars collapsing.

Civilizations rising across galaxies.

Rook stared upward in disbelief.

"…oh this is getting big."

The Watcher's voice filled the void again.

THE FRACTURE WAS CREATED AS A STABILIZATION SYSTEM.

Ghost frowned.

"For what?"

The answer came immediately.

REALITY.

Another window opened in the sky.

This one showed something terrifying.

Entire universes tearing themselves apart.

Time collapsing.

Dimensions folding inward like burning paper.

Rook swallowed.

"…that's bad."

EXISTENCE IS NOT STABLE, the Watcher continued.

WITHOUT CORRECTION, REALITIES COLLAPSE INTO ENTROPY.

Ghost slowly understood.

"The fracture connects worlds…"

The Watcher finished the thought.

TO REDISTRIBUTE DIMENSIONAL STRAIN.

Energy.

Matter.

Gravity.

Reality itself.

The fracture network balanced the pressure between universes like a cosmic relief valve.

Ghost looked up at the broken sky.

"But something went wrong."

The Watcher's eyes dimmed slightly.

YES.

Another image appeared.

Human scientists opening the first fracture experiment decades ago.

Dominion.

Their equipment tearing into something they didn't understand.

YOUR SPECIES ACCIDENTALLY DAMAGED THE SYSTEM.

Rook rubbed his forehead.

"So… we poked the cosmic machine and now everything's breaking?"

ACCURATE.

Ghost's jaw tightened.

"And my unit?"

The Watcher didn't hesitate.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE DURING SYSTEM BREACH.

Ghost didn't respond.

The silence said enough.

The Anchor's Purpose

The Watcher continued.

WHEN THE BREACH OCCURRED…

Its eyes shifted toward Ghost.

THE SYSTEM CREATED A CORRECTION VARIABLE.

Ghost felt a cold realization forming.

"You mean me."

YES.

Rook blinked.

"Wait wait wait."

He pointed at Ghost.

"You're telling me the universe installed a patch update?"

The Watcher ignored the humor.

THE ANCHOR EXISTS TO RESTORE BALANCE.

Ghost shook his head slowly.

"I didn't sign up for that."

IRRELEVANT.

The word carried absolute certainty.

Ghost raised his hand.

Omega energy flickered across his fingers.

"And what if I refuse?"

The Watcher tilted slightly.

Not threatening.

But calculating.

THEN THE SYSTEM WILL RESET.

Ghost froze.

"Reset?"

Another image appeared in the sky.

The Omega weapon.

Human technology trying to erase the fracture.

YOUR SPECIES HAS ALREADY BEGUN THE PROCESS.

Rook's face paled.

"Oh."

The Watcher continued.

IF THE FRACTURE NETWORK COLLAPSES COMPLETELY…

The image zoomed out.

Earth.

Then the solar system.

Then entire galaxies connected by fracture pathways.

ALL CONNECTED REALITIES WILL FALL.

Ghost whispered quietly.

"How many?"

The Watcher answered with a single number.

TRILLIONS.

Rook leaned back slowly.

"…no pressure."

The Decision

The Watcher's eyes dimmed slightly.

The test was ending.

THE VARIABLE MUST CHOOSE.

Ghost stared upward.

"You mean fix the fracture."

YES.

"And if I don't?"

The Watcher didn't hesitate.

YOU WILL BE ERADICATED AND REPLACED.

Rook looked between them.

"Well that's rude."

Ghost exhaled slowly.

His mind raced.

Dominion was firing Omega weapons.

The fracture network was destabilizing.

The Watchers were losing control.

And somehow—

He was the only thing standing between survival and extinction across trillions of worlds.

He laughed quietly.

Rook blinked.

"Why are you laughing?"

Ghost looked up at the cosmic entity.

"Because this is insane."

The Watcher didn't react.

Ghost lifted his hand again.

Omega and fracture energy spiraled together around his arm.

"Alright."

The entity waited.

Ghost's eyes hardened.

"I'll fix your broken system."

Rook sighed in relief.

"Good choice."

Then Ghost finished the sentence.

"…but we're doing it my way."

The Watcher's countless eyes brightened.

For the first time—

The ancient entity showed something resembling interest.

EXPLAIN.

Ghost smirked slightly.

"We start by shutting down Dominion's Omega weapons."

Rook grinned.

"Oh I like this plan already."

Ghost looked at the Watcher again.

"Then we fix the fracture."

A pause.

"And after that…"

His voice dropped.

"…we talk about why your system needed human sacrifice to work."

The fracture realm went silent.

Because the Anchor had just challenged the beings who created the universe's most powerful machine.

And the Watcher was still watching.
