Chapter 6 - CH 6

Jackson laughed," Yeah, somehow I don't think that's how it's going to happen. I think you are only cocky since you have me outnumbered." He pointed to all the team's positions. "Not a bad idea, but I have seen better. All of you can stop hiding."

Begrudgingly, all the Avengers materialized out of the greenery, slowly surrounding the teen. Without any warning, Percy charged Captain America, knocking him into a tree. Everyone was stunned at how fast it happened. Tony fired a repulsor and Natasha shot a dart towards the kid, but the kid expertly dodged it. Natasha ran up to meet Percy, hoping to beat him in hand-to-hand combat. She threw a punch at his left jaw, but he smoothly dodged, slipped past her defenses and swung a punch. She evaded the attack and tried to jab him in the gut. He rolled out of the way while sweeping her feet from under her with his leg, knocking her to the ground in an expert and fluid motion. At this moment everyone realized this kid had been trained. He had just taken out both Steve and Nat in less than five minutes!

During the fighting, Ant-man had shrunk down and ran to Percy's position. He quickly grew back to normal size, seemingly appearing right in front of the kid and he landed a hit to Percy's face. Surprisingly, only the kid's head moved as he stumbled back, but he didn't seem hurt.

Before Percy could retaliate, Tony's blaster hit the kid in the shoulder. He hissed in pain and stumbled forward into Ant-man, who kneed him in the stomach. Steve was back on his feet and so was Widow – they were closing in. Clint shot an arrow, but the kid caught it and tossed it aside. He dodged a punch from Steve and distanced himself from the rest of the heroes by several feet.

"Give up kid, you can't win a fight against all of us," Falcon spoke in a commanding voice. Instead of surrendering, the kid responded by raising his hands. The group backed up, a little tense, but when nothing appeared to happen they advanced.

Suddenly, The Avengers were stopped by a wall of water that hit Tony and War Machine, knocking them out of the sky. They weren't ready for that, the kid seemed to think, as grin appeared on his face. The shock was short lived however as Percy felt a piercing blow in his leg and he fell to his knees. He looked down to see that a dart was lodged in his thigh. The water circled around him but seemed to be weaker than before. The kid shook his head as if to clear it and tried to get to his feet.

"How is that possible? That was enough—" Clint was cut off as water hit him in the chest sending him flying deeper into the park. Jackson hissed as another tranquilizer hit him in the side of the neck. The water slowed even more as the kid fought off the effects of the drug, but he didn't last long. The water dropped and he fell forward bracing himself on his hands and knees, breathing hard. The Avengers approached cautiously. Widow came up behind him and hit the kid on the back of the head with the butt of her gun and the teen crumpled entirely into the wet grass.

"Was that necessary?" Scott asked. Breathing a little hard

"Quickly get him back to the tower. I should treat his injuries," said Bruce over the comms before anyone could answer Ant-man.

They got back to the tower in record time. They took Jackson to the infirmary where Bruce was already prepared and waiting. They laid Jackson on one of the beds as Bruce removed the kid's jacket and shirt. Bruce suddenly gasped. The Avengers turned back to see scars, many of them littering his torso. The largest one went from his shoulder to his opposite hip. Some were light and faded and some were raised and newer looking, standing out on the kid's tan chest.

"What did that to him?" Steve asked in a barely masked tone of horror and rage.

"We can ask when he wakes up, but right now I need to treat his shoulder," Bruce stated in an empty tone. The group could tell he was barely holding on to control of the Hulk. Bruce was upset at the number of scars on his chest, but knew he had another duty. He needed to care for the kid. He shooed the other members of the team out of the infirmary as he set to work.

Several hours later the team was sitting in the common room with Fury discussing Percy Jackson. Everyone was involved with the discussion (even Tony for the matter) except for Bruce, who was reading a report on his tablet. The report was a DNA analysis that he had taken from some of Percy's blood.

"He is definitely trained," Clint announced.

"Yeah and he has been in many fights, did you see those scars?" Rhody remarked. Everyone frowned except for Fury and Natasha.

"Some of those looked like bullet and knife wounds," Natasha started to say, but then Banner gasped. Everyone turned to him as he started tapping on the screen, muttering in confusion.

"Care to share, Dr Banner?" Fury asked in a commanding tone. Tony got up to look over Bruce's shoulder. His eyes widened in shock.

"That's strange. Did you run it again?" Tony asked in disbelief.

"I already ran it twice," Bruce responded.

"What is it?" Scott said, his voice full of curiosity, since it wasn't every day that two geniuses were surprised with something seemingly impossible.

"This kid's analysis is showing a few anomalies," Tony said, taking the tablet from Bruce.

"What do you mean?" Steve asked. Both men looked up seeming mystified at what they were examining.

"It's a bit complicated to explain, but essentially DNA is made of 46 chromosomes. These chromosomes are found naturally in pairs and so there are 23 pairs of chromosomes." Banner explained.

"What's strange in the case of the kid is that he seems to have some sort of gene mutation located on the 7th chromosome pair," Tony added, tapping the tablet in interest.

"Okay so what, as far as I can see the kid doesn't have down syndrome," Scott replied.

"Generally speaking, people with this type of gene mutation suffer from Williams Syndrome, not down syndrome. But with his mutation, there's something different. I've never heard of or seen anything like it," Bruce said in astonishment.

"So we're dealing with something we know nothing about," Steve concluded.

"Could it be linked to his powers or even his family," Rhodey asked. He couldn't believe this kid. Everything about him was strange.

"That's the other part that's confusing me. Obviously, I wanted to look to see who his family was but every time I analyzed his DNA I could only read his mother's part of his DNA. The reading goes haywire as soon as I look at the father's side." Bruce said, taking the tablet back from Tony and tapping a few buttons. A few seconds later he showed the tablet to the rest of the group. On it was a large box with the red letters "ERROR" written in it.
