Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Under Attack

"No, no, no, this can't be happening...." Rudra shuddered as he saw the flying monsters that were rampaging over the slums. Everywhere he looked, the only thing he could see was smoke and fire.

"I need to alert everyone, they will be here any minute now. I need to do something, think quickly," said Rudra as he shuddered. He knew that if he didn't wake the sisters up, there would be no chance of them surviving this disaster.

From what he had heard, he knew that the sisters of the orphanage were no ordinary people. All of them were people with superpowers, so waking them up was his top priority.

"Ah, yes, yes, that bell will do the trick. I will have to jump from the roof to reach the tower. I am running out of time. "Just then, Rudra remembered that there was a bell tower beside the orphanage building. Although the tower was just beside the roof, he would have to exit the orphanage building to reach it, which would take a little time, as all the gates of the building were closed at this time of night. Rudra looked at the tower at a distance and started running towards it with all the power he had in his legs.

'I hope I make this jump'

"HEEYYAAA!" yelled Rudra as he humped towards the tower. Even though the distance between the building and the tower is just a few meters, Rudra felt it to be miles apart. He had never in his life made this kind of jump, nor in his previous life or this life, so he prayed for success, as failure meant he would be dying.

"AGHHH.... yes, yes, I made it..." shrieked Rudra as he had successfully made the jump and managed to grab onto the ledge of a window. He slowly pulled himself up inside the window. He wiped his face after entering the window; it seemed that while jumping, he had hit his head on the tower.

'It seems I banged my head very hard on the wall,' thought Rudra as blood was gushing out of his fresh wound. Even with the blood, Rudra didn't stop his footsteps as he made his way towards the top floor of the bell tower. In no time, Rudra reached the top of the tower, and there in front of him was the bell.

DING DING DING

Rudra took the huge hammer beside the bell and started hitting it with all the force he could muster. Right after sounding the bell, all of the sisters of the orphanage were out of their rooms, still in their nightgowns. Most of them looked confused as to what was going on.

"What is going on?" asked sister Zoe, as she glanced around her, hoping for answers; alas, all she saw was confusion.

THUD

'Ju...Just what is this?' Suddenly, out of the blue, Rudra fell on his knees. He tried to look around, but to his horror, he was unable to move. As if he was being pressed to the ground by something invisible. This was the first time he had experienced something like this.

"Everyone, calm yourselves. We are under attack by a monster wave. Everyone, ready themselves, take your weapons, and get ready to fight." Just when Rudra was going crazy thinking about what had happened to him, suddenly he saw someone flying above the orphanage. The person was holding a halberd, even though it was dark, with just one look, Rudra could immediately tell that it was none other than his sister Maria.

'What in the world is this power? Was that the power they called Spiritual Pressure?' Rudra questioned himself as he figured out what was making him unable to move. To familiarize himself with this world, Rudra had read most of the books he found inside the orphanage library. He remembered reading about something called spiritual power; most of the living beings have this power within them.

When someone with higher spiritual power uses their power, if their target's power is drastically lower than the attacker they will feel just like how Rudra felt earlier. This experience had opened Rudra's eyes about just how powerless he really was. He knew that if sister maria as just been a tad bit late, some of the other sisters might have attacked him already, as they couldn't see it was Rudra on the bell tower.

"How is this possible, Sister Maria? How is there a monster attack this far inside the territory of Black Water? These monsters would have had to cross over from the frontier fortress city before they came here. We haven't even received any news of the fortress being under attack," questioned sister Zoe as she seemed confused by the sudden monster attack. Hearing the question of sister Zoe, most of the sisters present there nodded their heads as they were confused as well.

'Sister Zoe is right, was the frontier city wiped out or something? How come there was no news of there being any monster attack from there? Haaah... this sounds ridiculous, there is no way the city would be wiped out so easily. Human fortress resides there, so it is nigh impossible for that to happen.' Rudra was dumbfounded for a second as well. As per what the books describe, the frontier city is protected by one of the most powerful people of the empire, Augustus Shade.

"Dear Sisters, this is not the time for questions. First, I ask all of you to put all of your questions aside for now. We will have answers to all of our questions after we take care of this disaster. Now I want all of you to listen to me carefully. I want 15 sisters here at the orphanage. Your task will be to activate the holy artifact of protection. You 15 will be in charge of protecting the orphanage. The Rest of you will be coming with me," said Sister Maria.

"But, sister, with only 15 of us activating the artifact, we'll only be able to activate it for about half an hour. Will that be a sufficient amount of time?" asked Sister Nina as she seemed a little shaken.

"I just need 10 minutes to kill them all. Now do what I have instructed you to do," said Sister Maria with a cold look in her eyes. This was the first time Rudra had witnessed such an expression on Sister Maria.

"Oh, Radiant Goddess Lumina, thy foolish child prays to you, please protect all of us and provide us the strength to fight off this predicament." Suddenly, Sister Maria started praying. As if answering her prayers, in the dark of night, light began to shine upon Sister Maria and the entirety of the orphanage.

'Wh...What is this? What is going on?' Rudra started questioning himself. He looked dumbfounded as his injured head started to heal by itself. That's not all, though; he suddenly started to feel as if he was brimming with energy.

'So, it was true after all, Sister Maria really was a Valkyrie before she became a nun here at the orphanage.' Rudra just confirmed the rumours, as he saw Sister Maria's eyes turn orange. That was an undeniable proof of someone being a Valkyrie, one of the most powerful forces of the Radiant Church.
