Chapter 21 – Betrayal's Sting
Kiran's mind reeled as he processed what he had seen. Kaelara's expression had been a mask of calm calculation, but for a fleeting moment, Kiran had glimpsed something beneath the surface – a glimmer of guilt, of confirmation.
"Kaelara, what's going on?" Kiran demanded, his voice low and menacing.
Kaelara's smile was serene, but her eyes betrayed a flicker of unease. "I'm just trying to help, Kiran," she said. "But I think it's time we had a little chat."
Kiran's fire burned hotter, fueled by his anger and hurt. "You're working with the Syndicate, aren't you?" he accused.
The others stopped, their faces shocked and confused. Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Kaelara, is this true?"
Kaelara's smile grew wider. "Let's just say I have my own agenda," she said. "And it doesn't necessarily align with yours."
Kiran's flames erupted, and he launched himself at Kaelara. But she was too quick, dodging his attack with ease.
"You're making a big mistake, Kiran," she said, her voice cold. "I'm the only one who can help you navigate the Syndicate's inner workings. And now, I'm the only one who can save you from their wrath."
Kiran's anger and hurt gave way to calculation. He knew he had to get out of this situation, and fast. "Let's get out of here," he shouted to his companions. "We can't trust her."
As they fought their way through the Syndicate's ranks, Kiran couldn't shake the feeling that he had just been played. Kaelara's betrayal stung, and he knew he would never trust her again.
But he also knew he had to focus on survival. The Syndicate was closing in, and they had to get out of there before it was too late.
"Fall back to the hideout," Lyra shouted above the din of battle. "We'll regroup and come up with a new plan."
Kiran nodded, his fire burning brightly as he fought to keep their enemies at bay. They had been betrayed, but they would not be defeated.
Not yet.
