Chapter 14 - The plane of mind

[You have slain an awakened beast: carapace scavenger]

[Your soul grows brighter]

His heart was pounding. Sunny just trew himself over the edge to kill one of those beasts.

'So they are called scavengers.'

Unfortunately he was still hanging on the string. It was an accented memory an would not break under so little weight. But the same could not be said about Sunny.

The free fall and sudden tightening of the string sent considerable pressure on his arm and shoulder.

'It's dislocated'

Adrenaline was still running trough his body, giving him the illusion of not feeling pain.

Using his last strength and the support of the memory, Sunny climbed back up.

'My soul has grown stronger. So that's what's different about my own soul. I get soul fragments, or it's equivalent of it by killing. But can I still absorb soul shards?'

He had no way of finding out, the body's are deep below the sea.

'Two extra soul fragments.'

While thinking about the implications of this a sharp pain attacks him.

'The damages of this and last night are getting stronger.'

Then Sunny held his shoulder and pushed it in its original position with a scream of pain.

His arms and back aches the most. Everything else ached too but those two the most.

The attack of waves in the previous night left him in one of the worst conditions he ever experienced.

But still, nothing was broken, at most strongly bruised. Thankfully his innate ability strengthened everything of him, even his regeneration.

In this moment he wanted nothing more then to sleep, but he couldn't allow himself that luxury.

'What if another monster appears?'

'What if waves push me over the edge?'

It was just too risky.

He maybe could have regenerated to his former self in a couple of days. But the lack of sleep did not really help him with that.

Just then he saw something abnormal.

Far away a bright, white light illuminated the darkness of the starless void.

His empowered sight could zoom pretty close to the light, but not close enough to make anything out.

'Was this a nightmare creature?'

'It can't be one. No creature would dare light a fire here. Not somewhere devoid of light.'

Even a spark of it was like a sign thatasked for a gruesome death.

'It has to be a human, or a grout of humans. Inexperienced ones at that. Only they could be stupid enoigh to light a fire here'

A momentblater he saw the water split, huge tentacles growing out of its surface. Then the light disappeared, leaving him blind again.

The sight filled him with hope and dread at the same time.

It meant that there were people around here. He was not the only one in this cursed place. But the sight of the tentacles also sealed the fate of thise sleepers.

'I hope they survive.' He thought while sighing.

It was pretty unlikely.

The rest of the night was uneventful.

When the sun appeared on the sky, the sea left and freed the crimson labyrinth of its prison.

'The whale corps still has not been devoured.

He was sure some deep sea leviathan would eat it during the night.

But that was a good thing. Most of the scavengers would seek the corps out and leave the labyrinth for it.

Sunny now had another reason to leave his stone sanctuary. Next to food and water there also was the chance of finding human companions.

"No one survives in the dream realm alone" Sunny muttered to himself.

Just the chance of finding humans was enough for him to try.

Sunny carefully climbed down the stone mountain. It was slippery but manageable with the string as his safety line.

It would be virtually impossible for him to climb the stone formation up. At least without any help it would.

That's why he connected the string to the ground, giving himself a chance of climbing up again.

The mud was deep and moist. It was both hard and loud to walk in it. But not impossible. After a bit he found a way to comfortably walk over it, without loosing to much speed.

Hunger and thirst was plaguing his mind. He had neither food of a way to desalinate the water.

'I have to get myself a weapon.' He thought while reaching in the mud. It was full of bones and chitin pieces.

After a while he found a long bone. After striking it with another bone it was sharp enough for him to try to kill one of the creatures.

Not to far away from him he saw how a crab had hid himself underground.

'If I can't even beat an injured one, how can I escape from here.'

A yellow eye materialized itself on the long bone spear, giving him another perspective of the world.

A chaotic mess of dark, vile strings protruded from the mud.

'The mind filled with madness'

Then he took out another bone out of the mud, this one much smaller. He flips it once in his hand before throwing it on the beast.

A big claw pierces through the ground, crushing the bone into powder. The whole form of the scavenger revealed itself in the next moment.

"Your just as ugly as the last one." Sunny said before rushing to the creature.

The scavenger was damaged, a claw and half its legs missing.

The huge claw of the scavenger rushed towards Sunny with incredible speed and force.

Stepping a bit to the side, Sunny avoided the attack.

The force of the blow was so strong it could not be canceled. The huge form of the beast threw itself with the claw and was vulnerable to any attack from the side or back.

The bone pike grows ever closer before the scavenger tries to intercept it with its leg. Unfortunately hot him it went through the bone, as if it never existed in the first place.

The spear moves closer and phases through the leg, hitting the chaotic mess of the monsters mind instead.

A vile scream, so inhuman it sent shivers down his spine resounded from the creature.

He just directly attacked it's mind.

Before the scavenger could awaken from its shock another thrust pierced its mind. Then another and then another.

After the first attack it was pretty easy to pierce his mind again. Mind damage was different from physical damage. The pain of it could even stun mad creatures.

The chaotic darkness of his mind starts to unravel. Piercing the mind caused hemorrhaging in it. It took not long until it stopped moving.

'So mentally dead creatures are still considered alive.' He thought. The spell did not announce his kill, even after his mind was completely gone.

Dismissing his third eye from the bone, he pierced one last time. The self made spear enters through the eye and ravages its brain.
