Cherreads

Chapter 18 - Cursed Herald

[Your memory has been destroyed]

Just before the shattered pieces of metal could disintegrat, they struck one last time.

Another thought of the corrupted mind has been sliced.

The mind functions very similar to the body but it also could not be more different.

Just like the body, the mind grows tougher at higher ranks. He had barely been able to cut it.

But now that his weapon is gone he has no ability to do so anymore.

Half a moment later he slid under the beast, cuddling with the remains of fallen creatures.

Warm droplets of blood were flowing down his arms and shoulders.

Even if the bird was not able to see him it would most certainly smell him, or rather his blood.

The recent commotion even woke up the three children of that cursed abomination.

He hadn't had much time to act left.

Picking up a particularly sharp pieced chitin dreading to pierce his skin, he dashed in the direction of some annoyingly shrill screaming.

Just as he left his hiding spot a hand crashed into were he had just been, another quickly following the moving figure.

A dim yellow light faintly illuminated his sorroumdings before, with a quick stab, the amount of screamed reduced, and even more blood began to cover the nest.

Out of the perspective of his newly summoned eye he noticed the claw of the , now to him known Cursed herald, approaching.

Evading was not possible. So he tried to block, or redirect the force of the incoming attack.

Covered in a flurry of sparks the claw grew closer.

Before even his s'more fully summoned itself he was pushed back.

The singular, summoned parts were creaking under the pushing force of the attack while Sunny gave his all to minimize the damage taken from it.

Normally a claw attack of a fallen creature would have ripped him to synthpaste, but luckily he was not being attacked by the claws. For whatever reason the Cursed herald did not think of it. Rage and madness consuming every last piece of his broken mind prohibited the idea of doing so fromeven forming.

Still the push was powerfully enoigh for him to fly through the air. Just a few seconds later he would fall inside the Black Sea.

But Sunny was nothing if not spiteful. An extremely thin string, nearly invisible to the naked eye, was grabbing onto the fallen.

Instantly an overwhelming flow of madness was flooding his mind, suffocating his thoughts, drowning his sens of self, flooding his rationality with insanity.

One of the enchantments of his memory allowed one to share thoughts and emotions with the one connected to the other.

With humans it could be used to exchange information in secrecy, or maybe to communicate better during combat. But connecting with nightmare creatures was something different. Something sickening.

The niw fully summoned amore of Sunny helped him drag his opposition closer to the water. Unfortunately his weight alone was not enough to drag a fallen with him, not even if propulsed by the same creature.

But to Sunny the world froze. His eyes were observing the harrowing strings of madness while his head felt every single emotion and thought fought inside it. Insatiable wrath and hunger filled his mind, he understood the creature staring down on him.

He, no... they were feeling a starved, they were feeling wrath for their killed spawn, they were going to kill the insect breaching their nest and they were hungering for it.

Just as his mind was also starting to corrupt into insanity he saw something in the periphery of his third eye.

'A shadow in the water!' He noticed with a pang of clarity aawakening him.

Without even breaking the surface of the water, strands of black seaweed grabbed onto him, dragging both him and his dear bird companion under water.

The strength of the pull was not much stronger then that of the bird, but the momentum of a sudden pull combined with their lack of attention to the water surprised them enoigh to pull the fallen and him under water.

Severing his connection to the herald, his mind began to clear up, only to be filled with fright.

Not even a single thought was housed within his mind. The only thing keeping him somewhat conscious and able to move were Adrenalin and a primal will to survive.

He might have accepted this fate of dying if it were him from before his nightmare. But much has changed since then. It might have been a short time since then, but after facing the truest form of horror, after surviving being dissolved alive, he did not want to die. He cherishes his life. Maybe not the life he was living right now. But the chances life could give him, the though of surviving everything the world had thrown at him. To come out of this all and be able to say "I survived, I did it".

He cherishes this idea, and he won't let any seaweed monster or overgrown chicken destroy this dream of his.

As he was getting dragged deeper into the water, he felt the water above him stirr. The Cursed herald was trying to escape, flapping his wings to escape the suffocating grip of the seaweed monster.

Dismissing his amore again, for the second time now, Sunny escaped the grip of the tendrils only to summon it again the next second. After all it allowed him to move faster inside of water. But next to this he really had to thank the scavenger for dropping him this amore again. It had safed him from certain death for the second time this hour, both times by dismissing it.

While swimming to the surface he had not encountered any more tendrils of seaweed, the creature was fully occupied by the bird.

After just a few more moments he managed to break the surface of the dark sea, finally catching his breath before dragging himself up the high-point.

A sigh of relief escaping his mouth before an impact shook his armor. Then another one, and another one. The children of the Cursed herald were pecking his armored hands.

'They are weak. So... weak.' He thought while dragging his body over the edge.

'Are those really awakened?' He asked himself.

"I could have done more damage when I was still mundane." He scoffed

For the children of a fallen they were simply too weak.

But that was not bad. Not in the slightest.

A small smile formed on his face while he giggeled lightly. He was going to repay the pain and suffering that damned bird had inflicted upon him on those two.

Sunny did not even pick up a piece of chitin, crushing the bird under the bottom of his armored foot before falling on the ground out of pure exhaustion.
