Chapter 36 - The forest of death

All characters and story belong to Kohei Horikoshi and Masashi Kishimoto

The 78 candidates followed Anko to a forest surrounded by fences. At the place where she stopped, there was some kind of checkpoint with curtains and three chunin sitting on chairs, arms crossed, waiting for Anko's orders.

"The second exam will be held here," Anko said, her hands tucked into her jacket and smiling. "It's training ground number 44, but we call it the Forest of Death."

"This place gives me the creeps," Sakura said, trembling with fear.

—Hehe. I should. They call it the Forest of Death, and you'll soon find out why. —Anko said.

"Clown, stop talking nonsense and explain the rules of this exam to us already," Bakugo said, grumpily.

"So I'm a clown?" Anko said with a very fake smile.

Without warning, she threw a kunai, trying to graze Bakugo's cheek. But the ash-blonde's inhuman reflexes meant he narrowly avoided it. The one who didn't dodge was a grass genin with very long, dark hair; the kunai flew past, cutting off a lock of her dark hair. Anko's attack didn't end there. Almost instantly, she stood behind Bakugo and gave him a hickey on his neck by sucking hard on that part with her mouth.

Then two things happened at once: Bakugo took a giant leap forward, moving away from the "attacker," and the grass genin stood behind Anko, offering her the kunai she had previously dropped with her long tongue. Anko stood on guard in case of an attack.

"No need to get defensive. I was just returning the knife," the grass genin said.

"Thank you, grass ninja. But I advise you not to come behind me like that again, if you don't want an untimely end," Anko said in a threatening tone, but taking the kunai.

"Excuse me, but cutting my lovely hair... I'm afraid I got a little carried away," the grass genin said with a wicked smile.

Bakugo, who was still in shock, finally reacted.

"A premature end is what I'm going to give you! What do you think you're doing, you perverted old woman?" Bakugo said, touching his neck. His face was red, partly from embarrassment and partly from anger.

"I couldn't help it. I'm crazy about guys as energetic as you," Anko said provocatively, running her tongue over her mouth.

"I thought this forest was horrifying, but these people are even more so," Sakura thought, breaking out in a cold sweat.

—Bakugo-kun ...—Hinata thought, sad for the hickey he had given her.

"Hmmmm," Gaara thought, assessing the situation with his arms crossed.

"She's a bitch!" Ino thought, clenching her fist.

"When I'm done with this exam, I'm going to kill you. You fucking perverted old woman," Bakugo said, staring in disgust at the mark she'd left on him from the hickey.

"Seems like everyone's being irritable today," Anko commented, amused. "There must be something in the air. Haha. This is going to be fun."

"You haven't seen my irascible, perverted old woman yet..." Bakugo whispered, frowning.

Anko took a stack of forms out of her jacket.

"Before we begin this test, I need to give you all something," Anko said, pointing at the forms. "It's a standard consent form. Before the test, you must read it carefully and sign it."

"What for?" Naruto asked.

"Some of you may not return from this ordeal alive, and I need your consent to take that risk. Otherwise, it would be my responsibility. Hahaha," Anko laughed.

—Crazy perverted bitch.—Bakugo thought, rolling his eyes.

"I'm going to explain what we're going to do in this test. Here, pass these out," Anko said, handing the forms to Kabuto. He picked them up and began distributing them among the 78 participants. "The first thing you should know is that we're going to test your ability to survive."

—Surviving the test, what a pain...—Shikamaru thought with annoyance and yawning.

—First... —Anko took a scroll with a map from her kunai case.—I'll give you a description of the terrain where we'll do the test. Training camp number 44 has 44 entrance gates, sealed tight. Inside is a forest with rivers. In the center, there is a sealed tower located 10 kilometers from each gate. In this area 44, your survival test will take place. The test consists of...—she put the map in her kunai case.—...a fight in which ANYTHING GOES to get these scrolls. —She took two scrolls out of her back pocket, one white and one blue. —You will fight, using any weapon and any jutsu, to get these two scrolls. The white one is the scroll of heaven and the blue one is the scroll of earth. There are 78 participants here, that means 26 teams. 13 teams will have the earth roll, and the other 13 remaining ones will have the sky roll, which will be delivered by lottery in the booth where my kouhais are.—he explained pointing to the three chunins

"So how do we pass the exam?" Kiba asked.

—Your entire team must carry both the sky and earth scrolls to the center tower, Anko explained.

—That is to say, at best half will fail...—commented Sakura.—Or more, if there are teams that can't get both rolls.—

"Indeed," Anko said. "Aaaa, one more thing. The exam has a time limit. You must complete it within 120 hours, or five days."

"Five days?" Ino said, worried.

"But what are we going to eat?" Choji asked, regretting having participated in the exam.

"Finding yourselves a life. The forest is full of things to eat," Anko replied. "There's enough for everyone. But watch out for predators, poisonous insects, and carnivorous plants."

"I want to go home!" Choji complained.

"Shut up, Choji! That's why this test is called a survival test," Ino said, raising her voice.

"Basically, I don't think more than five teams will pass," Anko said. "Some of you will fail because you're losing your temper, and others will die from the harsh conditions."

"Can you give up in the middle of the exam?" Shikamaru asked.

"Of course not," Anko replied, feeling insulted by the suggestion. "You can't give up in the middle of a battle."

"Great. This is going to be a real pain," Shikamaru said, crossing his arms.

"Now I'll discuss the ways it can be suspended. The first..." Anko said, raising her index finger. "That the three members of the team don't reach the tower with both scrolls after five days. The second..." she continued, her heart also heavy. "That a team loses a member, or that a member of the team dies. And the third..." she raised her ring finger as well, "that the team looks at the contents of the scrolls."

"What if it opens by itself and is read by chance?" Naruto asked.

"It's best if you don't know," Anko replied with a fake smile. "There will be times when a ninja is asked to carry secret documents. The purpose of this rule is to test your integrity." After a brief pause, Anko continued. "We're done. Now sign your consent forms and exchange them at the checkpoint for your scrolls. Afterward, each team will choose one of the 44 gates and you will be allowed to enter. Since there are only 26 teams and 44 gates, no two teams will be allowed to choose the same gate. And finally, I'd like to give you some advice…" Anko sighed. "Don't die!"

—That crazy pervert finally finished speaking. I can't wait to get out of her sight. —Bakugo thought.

The chunin at the checkpoint called out in order of registration at the chunin exam to exchange the forms for the rolls. A dark curtain prevented the other participants from knowing which roll their rivals had drawn and which member of the three had it.

Bakugo, Sakura, and Sasuke's team was among the last to be called. They chose gate number 12. When they gave the chunin the three completed forms, the chunin exchanged them for a Sky Scroll, which Sasuke kept for himself.

"Hey? Why are you keeping this shit, Sasuke? Give it to me if you don't want me to kick your ass!" Bakugo threatened.

"I'm worried you might accidentally burn it with one of your explosions," Sasuke said.

"Mmmm." Bakugo wasn't entirely convinced by Sasuke's explanation. "Why doesn't the big forehead keep it?"

"No way! I don't want to carry that burden," Sakura replied, shaking her head.

"Decided then. I'll keep it," Sasuke said, putting it in his kunai holder.

"Tsk," Bakugo muttered. "Well, it doesn't matter. Even if you lose it, if I get a Heaven Scroll and an Earth Scroll, I'll fix your mess. But I warn you, I won't give you the scrolls I get, Sasuke."

—Same here, Bakugo. —Sasuke replied.

Once they had agreed, they left the checkpoint. Five more minutes passed until the last team received their corresponding scroll. Twenty-six Konoha chunin appeared behind Anko.

"Listen to me, everyone!" Anko ordered. "Now that you all have a scroll and an assigned gate, you will follow an instructor to your gate entrance! The exam will begin in 30 minutes! Good luck!"

The instructor Bakugo's group was assigned was a young girl with long hair. It took them about 15 minutes to reach gate 12, so they had to wait another 15 minutes.

"The exam begins. From this moment on, you have 120 hours to gather the Earth Scroll and the Sky Scroll and go to the tower," the long-haired chunin said to the trio of genin. "You may enter." She unlocked the gate with a key. "Good luck, guys. You'll need it."

"Ha. You've got the wrong group to wish good luck to. Luck is for losers, we don't need that shit," Bakugo retorted with a grin. "Are you guys ready for a crushing victory?" Bakugo asked Sakura and Sasuke.

"I'm not going to let anyone walk all over me," Sakura replied confidently.

"Heh. Get into the forest now, chatterbox," Sasuke said with a smile.

"Follow me! Time to beat up a bunch of extras," Bakugo said, entering first, his teeth showing with arrogance. Sasuke and Sakura followed him firmly.

Bakugo was very confident. What the ash-blond boy didn't know yet was that on the first day of the five they had to reach the tower, an event was going to happen that would turn his life upside down.
