Chapter 22: The Guard's Proposition

Before I could blink, he left the mine without saying a word.
I stood there, frozen, staring at the entrance where he had just disappeared.
When I turned to look around me, the other slaves were staring at me with expressions that screamed I was trouble. Instantly, they moved back, their eyes resting on the dead body lying on the ground, too scared to speak or even breathe too loudly.
"You there, slave."
A loud voice barked, and instantly I turned around. It was a guard, and he was glaring at me, his eyes roaming over my body in a way that made my skin crawl.
"Come over here."
He said. I looked around, seeing no other slave was beside me. Obviously, he was referring to me. So I turned, walking toward him slowly.
"Be fast about it."
He snapped, and I hastened my steps.
The moment I reached him, his hand grabbed me, jerking me forward and sending me crashing against his chest. The impact made him hiss with satisfaction.
