Stephanie's POV
Cane's birthday is in three days. I had this whole plan in my head. A real, proper candlelight dinner. Just the two of us. I'd make his favorite meal—that fancy steak with the peppercorn sauce he likes, even though I've never made it before. I wanted to do something nice for him. For us.
So, I decided to go shopping. I needed groceries and, honestly, I just wanted to look at baby things. Just to see them. Maybe buy a tiny onesie or two. I asked Cane if he'd come with me.
He was at his desk, staring at his computer. He didn't even look up. "Can't, Stephanie. I've got somewhere to be."
That was new. He always tells me where he's going. 'Meeting with the board.' 'Site inspection.' Something. My heart did a little dip.
"Where are you going?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
"Just business," he said, his voice short. Final.
