Avelina's lips parted, but no words left her mouth. She had been so caught up with the food and telling Alor the little secret that she hadn't heard her mother and father's footsteps.
Her hands moved nervously as she couldn't even think of what to say—nothing sounded right anymore. How was she going to explain this to her parents?
Why hadn't she been more observant and careful? She had been so hungry that she failed to ask if her parents had left or were still around. That was her mistake.

"Don't make me repeat myself." The look on her mother's face was so sharp and deadly, but Avelina managed to act composed even though her heart was beating with fear.
