"READY… SET…"
Present Mic's voice echoed through the stadium, a physical presence that vibrated in everyone's chest. The air at the starting gate grew thick with anticipation, muscles coiled, quirks ready to fire.
"GO!"
The buzzer's shriek was lost in the thunderous stampede of feet. The wide field funneled into a narrow corridor, and just as predicted, it became an immediate, chaotic bottleneck. Students pushed and shoved, their quirks flaring uselessly in the tight press of bodies.
"AND THEY'RE OFF! BUT WAIT, THE GATEWAY IS A TOTAL TRAFFIC JAM! A CLASSIC U.A. WELCOME, FORCING OUR CONTESTANTS TO PUSH AND SHIMMY THEIR WAY THROUGH!" Present Mic screamed into his microphone.
"It's an intentional design flaw," Aizawa's tired voice cut in. "The first test is seeing who is clever enough to bypass the mob. Anyone who gets stuck here isn't thinking like a pro."
As if on cue, two figures separated themselves from the herd.
"AND WE ALREADY HAVE OUR LEADERS BREAKING AWAY! IN A STUNNING DISPLAY OF AERIAL MOBILITY, AKAZA USES HIS QUIRK SHOCKWAV-- ER NO, BATTLE GOD, TO LITERALLY WALK ON AIR, SOARING RIGHT OVER THE COMPETITION!"
Akaza kicked off the air in a series of rapid, explosive steps, gracefully ascending above the struggling crowd below. He was followed almost immediately by a flash of white.
"RIGHT BEHIND HIM IS RUMI USAGIYAMA! LOOK AT THAT AGILITY! SHE'S RUNNING ALONG THE WALLS LIKE GRAVITY IS JUST A SUGGESTION! HER RABBIT QUIRK IS ON FULL DISPLAY!"
Rumi, her legs glowing with a faint red aura, leaped from the ground to the corridor wall, her powerful limbs propelling her forward in a gravity-defying sprint.
Before the crowd could fully process their lead, the rest of Class 1-A made their move. A wave of ice shot forward, coating the ground and the legs of several unfortunate students from other classes. Shoto Todoroki glided effortlessly over the frozen path he'd created.
"COLD! TODOROKI FROM 1-A FREEZES THE COMPETITION AND SURFS HIS WAY INTO THE LEAD PACK! THAT'S A POWERFUL AND RUTHLESS STRATEGY!"
"YOU ICY BASTARD!" Bakugo roared, using controlled explosions from his palms to blast himself over the frozen students and into the air, his face a mask of fury.
Yaoyorozu created a pole to vault herself over the crowd, while Iida used his incredible speed to navigate the few open gaps. Mineta bounced along on his sticky purple balls, and Tsuyu used her long tongue to swing from the ceiling. One by one, Class 1-A proved why they had survived the USJ, using their quirks with an ingenuity that left the other students stuck in the dust.
Emerging from the tunnel, the leaders were met with a new sight. The ground trembled as massive shadows fell over them.
"AND THE FIRST OBSTACLE IS… ROBO INFERNO!" Present Mic yelled as dozens of 0-point robots from the entrance exam activated, their single red eyes locking onto the students.
Two of the colossal machines moved to block Akaza and Rumi. It was a fatal mistake.
"OUR LEADERS ARE CONFRONTED! CAN THEY GET PAST THESE TITANIC OBSTACLES?!"
Akaza didn't even slow down. 'Shock Pulse: Tempest.' He became a blur, merging the aerial steps of Geppo with the instantaneous burst of Soru. He shot forward like a bullet, his body surrounded by a vortex of crackling shockwaves. His fist connected with the robot's chest, and with the force of his enhanced speed and strength, he didn't just punch it; he pierced straight through it. A massive hole was blown clean through the 0-pointer's torso, and it collapsed behind him in a shower of sparks and ruined metal.
"UNBELIEVABLE! AKAZA JUST PUNCHED A HOLE THROUGH THAT THING! HE WENT RIGHT THROUGH IT LIKE IT WAS PAPER!"
"He's not wasting any energy," Aizawa noted, a flicker of approval in his eyes. "Identified the target, neutralized it, and moved on. Efficient."
At the same time, Rumi's aura flared brighter. She used Soru, vanishing from her spot and reappearing in the air just before the second robot. She spun, bringing her leg around in a devastating axe kick. The impact, amplified by her aura and speed, shattered the robot's head, sending its metallic skull crashing to the ground.
"AND USAGIYAMA ISN'T LETTING UP! SHE DECAPITATES A 0-POINTER WITH A SINGLE KICK! THIS DUO IS ABSOLUTELY DOMINATING!"
Behind them, Todoroki simply waved his hand, and a massive glacier of ice erupted from the ground, freezing several robots in place, their limbs locked in awkward, immobile positions. He ran through the path he'd cleared without a second glance. Kirishima and Tetsutetsu, their bodies hardened, simply punched their way through the smaller robots, their fists turning metal to scrap. The rest of the students followed suit, using their unique quirks to bypass the now-imbalanced and frozen machines.
The next obstacle was a vast chasm connected only by a series of tightropes: The Fall.
For Akaza, it was barely an obstacle at all. He continued his flight with Geppo, soaring over the chasm without breaking stride.
"AND AKAZA EASILY CLEARS THE SECOND OBSTACLE! HIS ABILITY TO FLY IS A MASSIVE, PERHAPS UNFAIR, ADVANTAGE IN A RACE LIKE THIS!" Mic screamed.
"Life's not fair," Aizawa grumbled. "He's using his quirk to its fullest potential. That's the point."
Rumi didn't hesitate either. Her rabbit quirk gave her impeccable balance. She landed on the first rope and sprinted across, her movements light and impossibly fast, leaving the ropes barely swaying in her wake. The crowd watched, mesmerized, as others struggled. Tsuyu swung across with her tongue, Hatsume used her support gear to grapple her way over, and Uraraka made herself weightless to float across.
The final obstacle was a massive minefield. Explosions dotted the landscape as students carefully tried to navigate the treacherous terrain.
Akaza flew over it. Rumi, however, wasn't as neat with her approach. With her enhanced speed, she was a white blur, dashing across the field so quickly that the mines exploded harmlessly behind her, unable to catch up.
Akaza crossed the finish line first, the stadium erupting into a deafening roar. Rumi was only a few seconds behind him, securing second place with ease.
In the stands, Kenji was on his feet, laughing hysterically. "THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT!" Miriko and Kazuko were hugging, tears of pride in their eyes, while the orphanage kids were screaming Akaza's and Rumi's names at the top of their lungs.
Akaza waited for Rumi at the finish line. When she arrived, panting slightly, he bumped his fist against hers. "Not bad, carrots," he said with a grin. "You cheated," she shot back, though she was smiling. "Flying doesn't count."
Their banter was interrupted when the jumbo screen showed the drama unfolding behind them. Bakugo and Todoroki were locked in a fierce battle for third, blasting and freezing each other. But as they fought, a massive explosion erupted from the back of the minefield. Izuku Midoriya came soaring through the air on a piece of robot plating, propelled by the chain reaction of mines he had set off. He landed clumsily but safely, securing third place and leaving the other two in his dust.
Over the next several minutes, the remaining forty-two contestants crossed the finish line.
Midnight cracked her whip to get everyone's attention. "Congratulations to our forty-two finalists! Now, for the second event! The Cavalry Battle!"
She explained the rules: students would form teams of two to four, with one rider and others acting as the horse. Each person was assigned points based on their race ranking, and teams would try to steal headbands from each other.
"And the points are…" Midnight purred, a massive leaderboard appearing behind her. "In last place, forty-two, you get five points, and so on… and the point value for our first-place winner is… TEN MILLION!"
All eyes swiveled to Akaza. He was no longer a competitor; he was a final boss.
But then, Midnight held up a hand. "However! After a brief consultation with the judges, we are invoking a special rule for this year. Due to his unique ability of sustained flight, participant Akaza is deemed an impossible target to capture in this event. To maintain competitive balance, he will automatically advance to the final tournament round!"
A murmur went through the crowd. It was unprecedented, but logical.
"A SHOCKING TURN OF EVENTS! AKAZA IS SO OVERPOWERED HE GETS A FREE PASS TO THE FINALS! TALK ABOUT A V.I.P. TICKET!"
Akaza simply shrugged. He turned to Rumi, who was now the de facto target with her second-place points. He leaned in, gave her a quick, soft peck on the cheek, and whispered, "Good luck. Don't hold back."
The stadium, which had been buzzing with the rule change, went completely silent for a second, then exploded.
"WHOA! DID YOU SEE THAT?! A GOOD LUCK KISS RIGHT ON THE FIELD! YOUNG LOVE IS IN THE AIR, FOLKS!" Mic shrieked.
"Shut up," Aizawa sighed, already getting tired of the living speaker beside him.
In the stands, Kenji grinned ear to ear. "Attaboy." Miriko and Kazuko just smiled warmly at the sight. The girls in Class 1-A let out a collective "Aww," while Kaminari looked ready to cry with envy.
Akaza ignored them all and headed back towards the waiting rooms as instructed. He found an empty one, the distant roar of the crowd muffled by the thick walls. He lay down on a bench, hands behind his head.
'A free pass, huh?' he thought. 'Wonder what other differences will pop up this time.'
With the cavalry battle about to begin, he closed his eyes. Might as well get some rest.
