Chief Mrs. Alade stared at Teni like she was a stain on her expensive carpet.
"You're his wife?"
Teni stood tall. "Yes, ma. Legally and spiritually."
"Hmm. You're not Yoruba."
"I am! Half! Okay… a quarter."
Chief Alade turned to Dami. "You married a comedian?"
"Technically yes," he muttered.
The rest of the day became an impromptu "mother-in-law audition." Chief Alade tested Teni's cooking ("You used Maggi? Not bouillon cubes?"), her sewing skills ("That's a button, not an embroidery"), and her prayers ("You skipped Psalms?").
By the end, Teni was ready to fake a divorce.
But when Chief Alade finally left, she looked at her son and said, "She's loud. Strange. Sarcastic. But… she might be exactly what you need."
Teni blinked. "Wait… that was a compliment, right?"
"I think so," Dami whispered.
