Chapter 8 - who was at fault

Roy:

So, let's go.

Max:

Go where?

Roy:

To Henry. Before the killer gets to him, we should arrest him for his crime.

Max:

We'll need a warrant for that.

Roy:

Then what are we waiting for? Let's issue one fast.

Being in jail is definitely safer than ending up like the others.

Max (calmly):

Let's see…

Scene cuts to Max and Roy standing in front of Henry's bungalow, warrant in hand.

Henry:

So, you're here to arrest me for a crime that happened three years ago?

Max:

Yes.

Henry (smirking):

The court forgot about it. Why can't you?

Roy:

Because some cases get reopened — and this one just did.

Henry:

Alright. I still have the right to contact my lawyer, don't I?

Max:

Of course.

Henry:

Since I have no one else who'd know about my arrest, I can call my lawyer before we leave — according to the rules, right?

Max:

You're right. Make it quick.

(Henry walks into another room, pulls out a business card, and dials a number.)

Henry (on phone):

Hey… how are you?

Yeah, I need your help again. Like always.

Get the bail papers ready and close the file once I'm out.

Thanks, brother.

---

Roy (quietly, to Max):

Sir, I don't have a good feeling about this guy.

Max (nodding):

Me neither. He's no different from James.

Roy:

Exactly.

(Henry walks back down the stairs.)

Henry:

Can I come in my own car? Yours doesn't really look… comfortable.

Max (coldly):

Let's give you a taste of jail first. You're coming with us.

Henry:

Okay, okay. Chill. No need to get so worked up.

Roy:

A girl died because of you. You should've been punished long ago.

Henry (grinning):

Well, let's see if I break my own record of getting out of jail.

(He gets into their car.)

---

Scene: Police station.

As soon as his arrest is processed, Henry's lawyer — already waiting — walks over and hands in the bail documents with a smug smile.

Henry (stretching):

Whew… 0 seconds.

(He walks out like nothing happened.)

Roy:

He's really getting on my nerves now.

Max:

Mine too.

But there's nothing we can do. That's the law.

INT. HENRY'S LUXURY BUNGALOW – NIGHT – 12:03 AM

Henry stumbles inside, drunk, humming a party tune. He tosses his shoes off, flings his socks in different directions, and drops onto the plush sofa.

HENRY

(slurred, laughing)

Party kings never die, baby! Hahaha—

A moment of silence. Then—

CREAK.

The front door slowly opens.

Henry looks up, squinting.

HENRY

Hey—what the hell?

Who's there? Party's over, dude…

...Wait, no party here…

Footsteps echo from the hallway.

A CALM, DEEP VOICE (O.S.)

No, Henry.

The party's just getting started.

A soft jazz tune plays from the old radio. Static mixes with eerie melody.

From the shadows, a MAN IN BLACK steps out slowly. Henry tries to focus, chuckling nervously.

HENRY

You again? Listen man—hic—no party with you, alright?

Suddenly, the man grabs Henry's wrist and snaps it clean with a sharp crack. Henry screams, stumbling backward.

HENRY

AHHH! STOP! I—I'll pay, whatever you want!

THE MAN (coldly)

I don't want your money.

I want to break a record—

...in breaking bones.

Henry's eyes widen. The man smashes a nearby vase across his head. Henry collapses to the ground, groaning in pain.

The man lifts a heavy wooden chair—CRASH!—he beats Henry with it again and again until it splinters into pieces.

Blood spills. Henry crawls. The man calmly walks into the kitchen, grabs a knife, and returns.

He slices Henry's wrist open with precision.

HENRY (weakly)

P-please… no more…

With one final act, the man pulls out a steel hammer and breaks both of Henry's legs and arms. Henry stops moving. Blood pools beneath him.

A moment of silence. The man checks his pulse—dead.

He walks upstairs to a guest room, opens a side window, and leaps out into the garden below.chamges his look quickly.

He walks off into the night. Calm. Confident. Gone.

[Scene: Max and Roy at the crime scene]

Max: We warned him. (Standing at the crime scene, holding a new chit.)

(Reads the chit): "Who was at fault?"

Roy: He's getting darker with every message. The last one, the one with James, said: "Let's see if you can save him."
