CUT TO: Jail Visitation Room – Roy and Max stand before a glass window. NICK, mid-30s, rugged but sharp-eyed, sits on the other side.]
Nick:
Ronald never came to visit me after his girlfriend died.
Max:
Girlfriend?
Nick:
Yeah. I still remember our last conversation. He was completely broken. Kept asking, "Why is it always me who loses everyone?" He lost our mom, our sister, me... and then her.
Roy:
Can you tell us how she died?
Nick:
He said she fell from a ten-story building... a boundary wall collapsed on her. It was labeled an accident.
Max:
So you mean it was... just a mishap?
Nick:
He never believed that. After that, he changed. He had depression, anxiety... mental breakdowns.
Roy:
Was your brother left-handed or right-handed?
Nick (pauses to think):
Hmm... both, actually. He was ambidextrous.
(beat)
But... why do you ask?
Max:
Because we suspect he might be behind a series of murders.
(shows photos of the victims)
Nick (laughs bitterly):
Even if it's not him... I hope whoever did this never gets caught.
Roy:
Why would you say that? I know about your sister... but what about the doctor?
Nick:
That doctor? He was the reason our mother died.
Max:
Can you explain?
Nick:
Our mother had cancer. She was in critical condition. The doctors said only an urgent surgery could save her. But we were poor — couldn't pay the bills.
(beat)
They unplugged everything. Took off her oxygen mask. Left her to die because we didn't pay. She died in my arms.
(choked)
And just minutes later... my brother arrived. With the money he'd earned after days of hard work. But it was too late.
Roy:
Oh...?
Max:
Do you have any recent photo of him?
Nick:
The only one I have is from when we were kids. He was about ten in that picture.
(beat)
I don't know if it'll help… but you might find his recent photos at his girlfriend's house.
Roy:
Do you know where she lived?
Nick:
No... I never visited. But I remember her name.
