Chapter 35 - Chapter 14

Once Tom and Susan got outside, they saw a jack-o-lantern on the porch. Susan picked it up, looked at it, and saw the candle inside lit. The jack-o-lantern said, "Hello, love." Susan couldn't believe what she saw. The talking jack-o-lantern scared her, so Susan tossed it to Tom. Tom caught it and looked at it. The talking jack-o-lantern said, "Hello." Tom said, "You're creepy." Tom and Susan kept tossing the talking jack-o-lantern back and forth to each other until Susan screamed and threw it to the ground. When it landed, it landed in front of the house, but it didn't break. The talking jack-o-lantern said, "Will you two knock it off?" Tom and Susan stood still and listened to the talking jack-o-lantern. The talking jack-o-lantern said, "Listen, kids, you've got to save me." Susan said, "From what?" After they asked, a cool breeze blew in, and the talking jack-o-lantern knew what that meant.

The wind blew the gates open, and a headless horseman ran in. The talking jack-o-lantern said, "From him." Tom and Susan looked at the front gates and saw a headless horseman. Then they screamed in terror and tried to run back inside the house, but the door locked when the kids shut it. Since the door got locked, Tom and Susan ran to the backyard. The talking jack-o-lantern said, "Hey, you forgot something!" Susan ran back and grabbed the talking jack-o-lantern. Susan said, "Fine, we'll trust you, but if you try anything funny, I'll return you to Mr. Headless." The talking jack-o-lantern said, "By the way, you can call me 'Jack.'" Susan said, "OK." Susan ran off with Jack, and the headless horseman chased after them. When they got to the backyard, they saw the headless horseman coming, so they hid in the pumpkin patch. Since his light would give them away and the rain would put out his candle, Susan covered Jack up with her jacket so he would stay alive and not reveal his presence. While they were hiding, the headless horseman started chopping pumpkins in half, looking for Jack, but couldn't find him.

While it was pouring outside, the other kids heard the thunder and saw the lightning and rain through the windows. Then they all started to hear someone playing the organ, and all came out from hiding. They all met up in the living room and saw that Tom and Susan were missing when they did. Emma said, "Where's Tom and Susan?" Bobby said, "They're probably still hiding or went to look for whoever's playing that organ. We'll find them." Lou said, "Let's find out where that music originated."

The kids found the door that would lead them to the music and opened it. Then they all looked inside and saw an old organ playing itself. Then, a ghost appeared on the bench and showed himself. Violet said, "You guys might want to be quiet if you're going to watch this." While one ghost played the organ, the other ghosts flew in and danced to the music. Then the ghosts spotted the kids and Violet watching them, so the spirits began to sing and cover the room. The ghosts told the kids and Violet to listen closely. Then they sang about Halloween and expressed their love for it. They also sang about how hard they try to haunt and make people join them. Violet was enjoying the ghosts' song. While the spirits were singing, the kids tried to find a way out of the room. Then the ghosts sang about how sad it was, knowing the kids in the house would have to join them and haunt the house with them. They also sang about the many other things that would be planned for them if they refused. They showed the kids an image of their friends, Tom and Susan, and what they were doing now while they sang. When they saw they were outside in the storm, they decided to go after them while the ghosts finished their song. When they tried to leave, one of the ghosts shut the door and told them they couldn't leave yet. Then he joined in with the other ghosts, and they sang about how the monster reads their minds and transforms itself into their worst fears. When they finished singing, the back door opened, the boards were destroyed, and the kids left.

After they left, they went outside and saw the headless horseman trying to find Tom, Susan, and Jack in the pumpkin patch. Alex said, "Hey, headless." Alex threw a rock at the headless horseman to get his attention, hitting him. When the headless horseman turned around, his horse turned around, too, and saw the other kids. Then, the headless horseman got back on his horse, and they chased after the other kids. The boys ran in one direction, while the girls ran in the other. The headless horseman chased after the boys while the girls looked for Tom, Susan, and Jack. They peered out from where they were hiding, and when Jack peered out of Susan's jacket, his face cast a light, and the girls saw it. Once they did, they found where Tom, Susan, and Jack were hiding and got them to come out. They ran when they saw the boys run by them and the headless horseman behind them. Then, the headless horseman chased after all of them to the garden. Jack said, "The bridge, the bridge." The kids ran across the bridge, but the horseman stopped and didn't follow them over. Alex said, "He's not coming after us?" Jack said, "Of course not. The headless horseman can't cross covered bridges."

The kids walked into the garden and left the headless horseman on the other side of the bridge. While they were in the garden, Lou fell to the ground because two dandelions came to life, wrapped around her legs, and growled at her. Lou screamed, and Pablo pulled her up, and Lou pulled the dandelions around her legs out of the ground. Then Pablo took the dandelions off Lou's legs and threw them away. Then, all the dandelions in the garden grew as big as beanstalks and roared at Violet, Jack, and the kids. Lou screamed, "Killer dandelions!" The dandelions growled at Violet, Jack, and the kids while they ran through the garden, yelling for help. While running, they passed a bunch of scarecrows in the field. Once they ran by them, fire came out of the scarecrows' eyes, and one of them jumped down from its post. Then, it walked up to the kids and scared them. Emma said, "The scarecrow, it's alive." Then, all the scarecrows in the garden came to life, jumped off their posts, and went after the kids. Lou said, "They're all alive." When one of them got close to them, it lifted its arm, and a razor-sharp blade came out of it, and he smiled at the kids. Bobby yelled, "RUN!" All the kids ran for their lives, and the scarecrows turned their hands into sharp blades, pitchforks, buzzsaws, and other dangerous objects while they chased the kids.

The scarecrows chased the kids through the garden and to the tool shed. They tried to go inside when they arrived, but the doors stayed locked since no one had lived in the mansion for a hundred years. Then, the scarecrows held their weaponry near the kids, and the kids stood up against the tool shed. All the kids got down and screamed, but Bobby distracted them by throwing a pitchfork at them while the others ran off. Then he dropped the hose and ran off by himself.
