SOPHIA
The next morning, we finished our chores and i got ready with Katherine. Her grandmother had already approved of me working with her at the palace. It didn't take too much convincing. Katherine simply told her what she wanted to hear and she gave her permission.
That morning, she made sure to cook for us and after giving me the necessary advice that parents normally give to their children before their big day, she bid us farewell. It was nice to have someone here who cares about me genuinely. She reminds me of my own grandma.
"Your grandmother is very nice." I started small conversation as we started for the palace. "You're very lucky to have her."
"I know." She answered with a smile. "My parents died in a terrible pack war that happened when i was only ten years old and she took me in. She has been taking care of me ever since. I owe her my gratitude."
We arrived at the palace and after getting clearance from the guards at the gate, they allowed us to pass through. I walked in and is immediately smitten by place.
I am in awe of how big and magnificent it looked. I was like a miniature statue standing in front of an enormous building that covered a vast area of land. I can't believe that such places that i have only read in fairytale books even existed.
The palace was beautifully decorated and adorned with warm colors. It screamed of nothing but elegance and i couldn't stop myself from wowing at whatever i set my eyes on.
"This way." Katherine grabbed my hands and led me towards the back alley that led to the other side of the palace and i simply followed.
"We don't follow the main gates. It is reserved only for the royal family. We use the servant's gates or we get punished." She informed me.
As we approached the small gate, i could hear noises coming from inside. Katherine opened the gate and as soon as we got in, i saw different women who i presumed to be maids running around in their work attire. If i didn't know any better, I'd say that there was a celebration ongoing. Everywhere was nosy and in utter chaos. It felt like an emergency day at the clinic.
Katherine introduced me to the head maid, Clarissa who was supposed to interview me for the job opening. Apparently, it was a position as one of the Queen's handmaiden. Judging from how she sized me up, i could tell that she didn't like me very much but I didn't care. I didn't come here to be liked. I came here to find my way out of this place.
Katherine handed me over to her and went on with her duties. I was supposed to meet her out here when i was finished. I followed the head maid to a private room and we started the interview. I made sure to answer her questions to the best of my knowledge and an hour later, we were done.
"Alright Sophia, I'll let Katherine know about my decision later." She smiled at me but it didn't reach her eyes. Deep down i know that she didn't mean it. She didn't want me here and it shows.
"But what if—" I was saying when i heard a loud bang coming from outside, startling me.
"Wait here." She instructed me and rushed out the door. I couldn't just sit there so i stood up immediately after she left and followed her till we got to the kitchen area. There was a commotion and i couldn't spot Katherine anywhere.
"Call the royal physician!" The head maid screamed at one of the maids who ran off almost immediately and that's when i saw the person on the ground fighting for her life.
I had an inkling to help but fought against it. My medical self taking over but i resisted. I shouldn't get involved in this. The maid came back minutes later.
"He's attending to the second Luna Queen and he can't come here now." She said rushing her words. I thought about it for a while and left with no other option, i pushed through the crowd and made my way to the front.
"Everyone step back and give her some space to breathe." I ordered in an authoritative tone and they did so immediately.
"What do you think you're doing?" The head maid attacked me, grabbing my hands from her body. "You're not a physician so go away before you do something worse."
"I can help her but if you don't let me then she will die." I deadpanned. She looked around and the other maids nodded their heads in approval.
"You can trust her. She's the reason why my grandmother is alive. I trust her." I heard Katherine's impending voice from behind me. The head maid lets go of my hand almost immediately and urged me to continue.
"Thank you." I said to her and set out to work. I checked her pulse and had them bring me some herbs that i grounded together to make medicine since they didn't have a hospital here.
When i was done, i put the mixture into her mouth and minutes later, her eyes fluttered open. I heaved a sigh of relief when she regained consciousness. They carried her away when i told assured them that she was out of danger.
Everyone thanked me and before i knew it, everyone was talking about it. For days, the news spread like wildfire—The mystery physician.
Even though i was scared that it might bring me more popularity that i didn't need, I still felt happy to know that i could make use of my talents but what i didn't expect was the Alpha King's summon to see him. It had come as a shock to even Katherine.
"What did you just say?" I had asked the guard who came to deliver the message to me.
"The Alpha king requests your presence at the palace miss and he doesn't want to be kept waiting."
Just what on earth have i gotten myself into now?
